DC with threadworms in Greece. Need prescription

Greekseaview · 07/08/2025 21:04

The pharmacy said they need a prescription; the medical center said they need to examine DC. DC doesn’t want to get their bottom examined by a strange dr. I think the whole thing is ridiculous.

We are in an apartment with one bathroom, spending lots of time together so likely to get all infected; still a week of holiday left.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Are there any natural treatments, besides good hygiene. We don’t have a washing machine here.

How old are the children? Is this one of those cases where you need to make the decision that they need to be seen by the Dr for the sake of the whole family and their holiday?

angelinawasrobbed · 07/08/2025 21:20

Whereabouts are you?

angelinawasrobbed · 07/08/2025 21:21

I’m guessing g Greece? There might be a local mumsnetter who knows the drill. I can’t believe parents always go to the dr for Greek threadworms

Rocknrollstar · 07/08/2025 21:22

They need to be told that they have to be examined by the doctor. You are the adult and they are the child.

HostaCentral · 07/08/2025 21:25

You can just be extra vigilant with bum washing every morning and every evening. Change pants every morning. Keep hands clean. Some people suggest vaseline on the anus helps.

I know people who can't take the pills successfully clear them with washing.

Assume your sheets will be changed regularly??

Neurodiversitydoctor · 07/08/2025 21:25

Can you get Amazon to deliver some Ovex it does seem odd they need a doctor, do you think they misunderstood you in the pharmacy ?

myplace · 07/08/2025 21:27

Diatomaceous earth, I think, in food quality. Don’t know how you get it there.
But if there were reliable natural remedies the NHs wouldn’t prescribe.

Keep everyone’s nails short. Use nail brushes. Put him in gloves and pants at night. Everyone should wear underwear at night and shower every morning.

Then forget about it until you get home.

HappydaysArehere · 07/08/2025 21:30

Good idea getting the children checked out. It’s likely that the children are the carriers. It’s well known that they are most likely to pick them up from school. If that is the case then all of you might be able to get a prescription. You don’t say how old they are but the younger they are the more likely this has happened. If they are young perhaps you can have a look. I remember doing this when my girls were young. You can see them wriggling about. The doctor said half the school probably had them. It is rotten for you - so sorry you have this problem on your holiday.

I wouldn’t tacitly agree with the child that it’s OK to avoid the doctor because it’s an unknown doctor or because of embarrassment or that there’s anything strange about a doctor looking at your bottom when there are worms living inside it. This could set a bad precedent.
The UK sells a lot more medication over the counter than do other countries. Where I used to live, paracetamol for children had to be prescribed, for example. So I don’t find it odd that the pharmacy won’t sell it, particularly to someone who doesn’t speak the local language.

AlertEagle · 07/08/2025 21:45

You have to wash bum morning and evening, clean towel each time so 2 towels in one day, clean underwear, wipe all surface, no fingers in mouth, cut nails short, I’ve heard pumpkin seeds in the morning work for worms but haven’t personally tried it.

stichguru · 07/08/2025 21:52

Your child needs to see a doctor, so you make your child see a doctor. There's nothing that complicated about it.

stichguru · 07/08/2025 21:55

You don't say how old DC is, and hopefully they will be lucky and not often have to see doctors in their life, but they may do. They need to be ok seeing a doctor because one day, heaven forbid, they might need to see a doctor to save their life.

TY78910 · 07/08/2025 22:06

I don’t have any practical advice but surely the dr wouldn’t be examining his bum, they would ask for a stool sample?

Ducksurprise · 07/08/2025 22:09

You don't need to see a doctor immediately for thread worms. Wash twice a day, cut and clean nails.
See doctor when home.

I was abroad once and needed antibiotics. I found a website that did phone consultations for around 30 quid. They texted me prescription which I took to a pharmacy and they filled it without any issue. The website was specific to the country I was in but try goggling something similar for where you are x

ChateauMargaux · 07/08/2025 22:15

Pumpkin seeds.... for everyone.

Are you in an airbnb, resort, private rental? Maybe the owner / contact can help?

Good luck... this is unpleasant but not serious.

janehopper · 07/08/2025 22:15

Nah they won't need their bum examined, there's nothing to see unless it's at night surely? They just mean you need a dr to give a prescription? But to be fair not sure I'd bother til you get home if it's a big hassle.

Fly1ngG1raffe · 07/08/2025 22:25

You won’t be able to get rid of them on holiday and will just neeed to repeat treatment when you get home. No harm will be done by following the hygiene measures suggested by PPs then treating when you get home. You’ll need to treat the whole household anyway.

absolutely no need for a doctor to examine a child for threadworm, especially if parents can confirm they’ve actually seen the worms.

hopsalong · 07/08/2025 22:33

Just go to a different pharmacy. You can buy strong painkillers, muscle relaxants, anti-depressants etc over the counter (if the highly trained pharmacist thinks you need them). I’m sure you can buy Ovex!

TeamGeriatric · 08/08/2025 00:45

Just wanted to say last week had the exact same experience mid-holiday in a different location, luckily somewhere I could get medication over the counter. Sympathies.
