DC with threadworms in Greece. Need prescription

Greekseaview · 07/08/2025 21:04

The pharmacy said they need a prescription; the medical center said they need to examine DC. DC doesn’t want to get their bottom examined by a strange dr. I think the whole thing is ridiculous.

We are in an apartment with one bathroom, spending lots of time together so likely to get all infected; still a week of holiday left.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Are there any natural treatments, besides good hygiene. We don’t have a washing machine here.

Threadworms can be painful for a woman. I'd see the doctor. If an examination is proposed you can bail at that point. Hopefully they will just want to discuss symptoms.

HoppingPavlova · 08/08/2025 05:45

I’d be surprised if examination meant what you think it does. Most cases of worms you would never see anything by sight, so I’m guessing the examination would consist of a chat, where the Dr then agrees it’s most likely worms and gives the script.

You don't say how old DC is, and hopefully they will be lucky and not often have to see doctors in their life, but they may do. They need to be ok seeing a doctor because one day, heaven forbid, they might need to see a doctor to save their life.

It if a bit different.

I think is ridiculous having to see a dr for threadworms and in a different country which is not your own

A pharmacist in Greece will have a good standard of English, so , as you say OP, there is not likely to be any misunderstanding.

Not all Greek doctors are male. Ask about women doctors locally.

Maybe, will double check this morning

The generic name for the medication is Vermox and it should be available over the counter without prescription.

Pumpkin seeds.... for everyone.

Are you in an airbnb, resort, private rental? Maybe the owner / contact can help?

Good luck... this is unpleasant but not serious.

Airbnb. Thank you

Will try pumpkin seeds

A teenager should be able to manage this without infecting you all. My dc had them at different times, there was never cross infection amd I never got them. How on earth did she pick them up?

It’s actually mebendazole

No idea how they picked them up. In a toilet I guess?

We are sharing one bathroom which we are cleaning each time

How did you get on OP?

Branleuse · 08/08/2025 09:35

I googled and it said that mebendazole is available over the counter in Greek pharmacies. Maybe try a different pharmacy

I guess different countries have rules about what requires examining and what doesn't and what medication needs prescribing and what doesn't. You may think it's ridiculous, but it doesn't change the facts that you son needs examining to get medication he needs now in the place he is now, and it won't hurt him to learn that letting unfamiliar medical professionals is something he may need to do. After all he could be ill on holiday with something less clear cut and he would need to cope with being examined.

helpfulperson · 08/08/2025 10:15

My travel insurance includes access to an English speaking doctor via a zoom link. They can provide prescriptions if appropriate. Maybe worth checking to see if yours has the same.

Not a child but a teenager; she won’t expose her anus and vagina to a male strange greek dr

This is a really weird way of wording this. By going along with her refusal you're giving her ideas that a medical examination is somehow wrong or sexual. I don't know the greek health system, but if you need a prescription you need a prescription, and if you can only get a prescription by seeing a doctor that's what you'll need to do. You're the parent so quite frankly grow up. 'A male strange greek doctor'... wtf. It's a medical professional. If she'd prefer to see a woman that's fair enough, but the fact they're a stranger and greek should be nothing to do with it.

ETA - you can also chaperone her for the exam if you're actually paranoid that something would happen.

Ducksurprise · 08/08/2025 13:07

@owlexpress it is you that is weird. Forcing a teenager to be intimately examined for no reason will cause more long term reluctance.

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 08/08/2025 13:20

Try again at a different pharmacy (or several)and just ask for ovex/mebendazole. You can buy it over the counter for kids two and over so who knows what happened with the pharmacy you went to. It will be the easiest and simplest solution.

Edited

I think it is ridiculous going through all that rigmarole for threadworms.

Thank you all. We are treating it with good hygiene, carrots and pumpkin seeds for the moment and will try another pharmacy.

Sorry didn't read the whole thread but there's an online service for GPs that services all of (EU) Europe.

Appointments are circa 20 GBP

They book it on the spot and (usually take 1 hour) do a video appointment.

I had a urinary infection in France and the doctor (Italian) spoke with me via video, sent me the prescription via email and offered to also send it to my pharmacy of choice.

I can't remember the name of it now but I'll google.

IceBrownie · 08/08/2025 19:03

Right, found the email they sent me with the prescription

Great. Thank you very much
