What does a holiday mean to you?

A holiday to me is being able to do one of my regular sports/activities but just in a nicer location with better/consistent weather.

I plan my holidays around a chosen outdoor sport. So choose the sport first, then the location, then accommodation and means of travel.

I don’t mind doing all the normal boring stuff such as supermarket shop, cooking, laundry etc

That is the exact opposite of a holiday for me! I want to get away from my usual life, completely switch off and relax. I do not enjoy self catering holidays, I don't really see the point, as I'm just taking the usual drudgery to a different location.

I want to have a city / town to explore and a nice hotel next to a lovely beach to come back to. I don’t want to do any cleaning or cooking on holiday. Doesn’t necessarily have to be all inclusive but lots of restaurants nearby and not too many crowds.

StrawberryCranberry · 02/08/2025 09:39

To me a holiday can mean different things! We love skiing and we've also had active summer holidays in the past, so it could be similar to your description. We have sometimes done the all inclusive thing in pursuit of complete relaxation. Or we've also had city holidays (eg Paris, Florence, Istanbul) that are about seeing the sights and experiencing a different culture. They've all been good in different ways.

Same.

A place where I can discover new things, maybe try some activities.

We love history so often look for interesting places and some possibility for some gentle walking/hiking.

I don't mind s/c but also like a good hotel but that more if I can't rely on the weather, nothing worse than being coped in a small hotel room because the weather is bad.
Or s/c is difficult because of the location, I am fussy and want a decent supermarket to use food from.

What do you love about the location?

Yes was going to say the same. I'm the opposite of the op. I don't want to cook, clean or do laundry. It's a break.

I also don't consider a holiday a holiday unless there's sunny weather and either a pool or beach. I love to be in water so that's a huge part for me

shellyleppard · 02/08/2025 09:41

Relax, explore and absolutely no cooking or housework!! Self catering is definitely not for me...

Yes! That is nice!… I am currently reaping the perks of being a teacher by lying in bed with a coffee knowing I have 4 weeks off stretching out in front of me

A holiday is when you go somewhere other than where you live for a few nights or more for the purpose of enjoying yourself.

FloofyBird · 02/08/2025 09:43

No work, definitely no cooking! We usually go self catering but eat out/get takeaway for dinner. We like to be busy so will go somewhere new and day trip to local attractions or activities. Might have the odd quiet morning/afternoon but I get bored easily just sat round. No where too hot!

Ddakji · 02/08/2025 09:44

Not working.

Not being at home.

Being able to escape the endless mental cycle of what needs to be done for a week.

We do self catering as I don’t mind doing some houseful stuff on holiday as it’s just more relaxed anyway, and we still eat out half the time.

SisterMargaretta · 02/08/2025 09:44

Spending time together as a family, eating meals outside, sightseeing, swimming, gokng to the beach, reading, enjoying peace and quiet. We don't like crowds so always self-cater in a house in a peaceful location.

Somewhat similar, I had to self-cater in the past, but hated it.
I like to be in a different culture. love trying new things, visiting archaeological sites, etc
I can laze around at home for free, so I'm very active on holiday -as far I can be !

Cynic17 · 02/08/2025 09:45

Relaxation, new places, probably culture, eating out, not having to talk to anyone (apart from person/people I'm travelling with), reading lots of books, not having to make my own bed.
Definitely no cooking, laundry etc, which is why self-catering is not a proper holiday (I did it during the pandemic, because options were limited, but it's not relaxing).

Did you take that straight from the dictionary?

I get bored easily too. I do like sitting in the sun reading my book, but I can’t do it all day. Maybe an hour or 2. I need to have earned it though with some sort of activity beforehand

A holiday to me is all inclusive, somewhere warm, with lovely pools and beach. Lots of reading and relaxing and bobbing about in the water. Then evenings playing Uno with my husband and daughter. I don't want to make friends and I don't want to join in with any poolside activities.

I find those thread interesting because people have different ideas of what a ‘proper’ holiday is.

No does it say that in the dictionary 😂
That's what a holiday is to me 😂

Caspianberg · 02/08/2025 09:52

Somewhere different from where I live.

Holidays vary for us. We often go to hotels, sometimes to apartments or small b and b. Sometimes we eat at hotel, sometimes self cater with a mixture of restaurants

I need something to do other that sit around a pool all day as I get bored. A pool is nice for an hour. We do a mixture of cities and rural.

We also work on holiday sometimes. It means we can maybe do a 2 week trip v 1 week. Dh often works on travel days as can get a fair amount done sitting at airports and on plane or train.

notevencharging · 02/08/2025 09:59

Not working, not doing much laundry/cleaning (obviously clear up after ourselves as we go along), being by the sea, having some nice meals out. I don’t mind some basic self catering when I’m away, I much prefer an apartment/cottage to hotels.

Dontcallmescarface · 02/08/2025 10:24

For me it's completely switching off from the everyday routine and just being able to live in the moment. I enjoy sightseeing and just sitting reading in equal measure and being able to do both with no distractions is bliss.

Vintagefair · 02/08/2025 10:25

Camping somewhere remote and beautiful a walk from the beach. Up early to stroll through the lanes to the sea for a leisurely swim. Back to the tent for a cooked breakfast and a loaf about with my book and a coffee. A little faff about to tidy up the tent then out for a walk in the hills, perhaps a pub lunch. Home for a snooze then another stroll before getting back to the camp. Light the BBQ, lovely dinner, a quiet glass of wine as the birds fly home. Fairy lights and star gazing then snuggling up in bed cosy as can be.
