What does a holiday mean to you?

A holiday to me is being able to do one of my regular sports/activities but just in a nicer location with better/consistent weather.

I plan my holidays around a chosen outdoor sport. So choose the sport first, then the location, then accommodation and means of travel.

I don’t mind doing all the normal boring stuff such as supermarket shop, cooking, laundry etc

Activity based - being able to see to do something new - like a new walking routes
cutting a few corners like on the food - more treat food , focus on simple , a few meals out

We are similar OP. Pre-kids our holidays revolved around stuff like cycling.

We still cycle on holidays now but it’s family rides not epic mountain climbs!

Now with a young family our holidays revolve around around stuff like beach time, swimming, paddleboard, cycling, hiking. We’re not really into “big ticket” events or attractions as they rarely live up to expectations and are always too busy.

On the rare occasions I get to go away with friends (without kids) I like it to involve cycling or running.

I don’t see the point in long haul with youngsters it just sounds stressful to me. Our best holidays with kids have been Wales, New Forest, Isle of Wight.

My friend just did Rome in the summer heat with young kids - I could think of anything worse!

It is defo possible yo do the activities you want to do with kids in tow. Just the expectations need to be lower.

We’ve been on a few climbing trips. We’ll climb in the morn with the kids. When it is mine or dh turn to climb then the kids would sit at the bottom with entertainment of some sort (switch or ipad normally 🙄).

Then chill by the pool in the afternoon. The kids don’t want to climb all day, which is fair.

Now they’re older, it’s easier!… This yr we are mnt biking in the Alps, which is a similar set up to skiing. But without the lessons

Lying under a beach umbrella, reading a book. Wandering into the town for a stroll and a nice lunch/dinner

For me, nowadays it's about spending an extended period of time in the company of people I really want to be with (so either DH and/or the DC, or a good friend or 2) without having to juggle other commitments/expectations. At home, even with the best intentions it's very easy to end up having quality time interrupted. Anything else is an added bonus and with the right company I know I'll have a great time whether we're relaxing in the sun being waited on, camping somewhere in the UK or taking in the sights in a lovely city. The only other thing I need is good food that's either cooked for me or is simple to prepare and all adults share the work. This is why I feel murderous if anyone suggests I take a work call, or check e-mails/whatsapp etc when I'm on holiday (and the reason I have been known to claim to be up a mountain with no wifi/phone reception when I am actually in a lovely hotel in a major city)

My idea of a holiday is seeing as much of a country as possible. We genuinely never stop when we are away but that's the way we love it.
