What does a holiday mean to you?

A holiday to me is being able to do one of my regular sports/activities but just in a nicer location with better/consistent weather.

I plan my holidays around a chosen outdoor sport. So choose the sport first, then the location, then accommodation and means of travel.

I don’t mind doing all the normal boring stuff such as supermarket shop, cooking, laundry etc

Not working, but relaxing, with no deadlines or timing or need to be anywhere. I like nice scenery, sea or lake, lovely terraces, good food. Mix of things to see / visit and a sunbed on the beach or by the pool. I prefer self-catering to hotels as i am not a huge breakfast eater and prefer to lounge round drinking coffee in the morning and not having to be dressed and out for breakfast. I also like having decent outside space to sit in the evening / afternoons with a drink. We don't tend to cook much - mainly eat out - though might do simple salads / BBQ / nice things from the market. Somewhere to have a nice pre-dinner stroll / drink.

Cattery · 02/08/2025 10:35

A week of no cleaning, tidying, washing etc. Read my book. Sunbathe. Swim. Get dressed up for the evening x

Typicalwave · 02/08/2025 10:36

A pile of extra work whilst everyone else has fun

herbalteabag · 02/08/2025 10:37

Exploring a new place, beautiful scenery, the possibility of swimming in warm, clear water, lovely local food.

Spending time together as a family, eating meals outside, sightseeing, swimming, gokng to the beach, reading, enjoying peace and quiet. We don't like crowds so always self-cater in a house in a peaceful location.

Yes a bot the same, but sometimes we have quiet beach holidays sometimes mountain or city breaks but just what we all want to do at different times and sometimes nothing just relax

BluFiore · 02/08/2025 10:40

No cooking. No cleaning. No working. All with a nice view and nice weather.

TheTremblor · 02/08/2025 10:43

Resting, warm weather, no housework, no cooking, nice food, lots of reading in the sun and swimming in the warm sea

TeamGeriatric · 02/08/2025 10:45

My idea of a holiday is somewhere with plenty of cultural sites to enjoy, so often we end up in cities (or on the coast near a city) and I usually like to have UNESCO world heritage sites to explore. I don't mind a bit of beach time, but avoid anything very touristy. I'm also quite happy in more rural areas if there are hiking opportunities, love a long weekend in the Lake District, but don't really class that as a holiday.

WonderingWanda · 02/08/2025 10:52

A break from routines or stresses, a treat, something new and interesting. It very much depends on what I need at the time It's nice to go away from home to avoid the never ending jobs list. Sometimes it's nice to escape domestic drudgery e.g. a fancy resort with AI. Sometimes it's just nice to switch off and go at a slower pace e.g camping. Sometimes warmer weather and something interesting is welcome e.g a sightseeing trip further south in Feb half term. Sometimes I am just end of term exhausted and want to sit on my sofa in pj's watching junk TV and having no pressure (first week of the summer hols).

ImAPreMadonna · 02/08/2025 10:53

A stack of books, a quality sunlounger (wooden, deep cushions, no fighting), a pool and a beach. A quiet and peaceful hotel.

Waiter service for drinks and food to the lounger (with my need given by putting a flag on the head of the lounger), very hot weather and lying down. Read and people watch all day. Swim - often lengths early morning before the rest of the small but perfectly formed hotel awakes. Read books in the pool if too hot.

Zero ‘animation’. No or very few kids. All by myself. 10 days. I’ve done it 4 times now and it’s heaven.

stayathomer · 02/08/2025 10:56

It’s being anywhere I don’t have the option of doing anything more than a slight clean, so if I’m here I’ll inevitably have something to do, a mobile home is a quick sweep etc. To be honest the holiday most talked about was one night away in a self catering house two hours away which was two days which included a hike, the beach, crazy golf and meeting up with their cousins for an hour! (Glad we spent so much on a trip to America last year- not!!!)

cofffeeee · 02/08/2025 11:00

My holidays.
Not being home.
Not working.
Sleeping around.
Looking around.
Buy cheap knock off crap.
Doing all the things i want to do.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/08/2025 11:05

Hot weather, lots of lounging by the pool, maybe a massage, nice bars and restaurants and a couple of interesting day trips. Absolutely no cooking, cleaning, washing or ironing of any description.

CandyCane457 · 02/08/2025 11:09

I have two!

Classic, summer beach holiday. A large group of us, my group of 12 friends. Villa with a private pool. Bbqs at the villa some nights, eating out at yummy beach side restaurants other nights. Days in the pool or at the beach.

European city breaks with my partner. Exploring all day, taking in the culture, lovely restaurants. Stay in a hotel and bonus points if we can get one with a spa/hot tub for the evenings. We love a busy day, relatively early evening meal, back at our hotel by 9pm and a couple of hours winding down in a pool or hot tub before a relatively early nigh, before another day of adventure begins.

Currently 38 weeks pregnant with my first, wondering when I’ll ever get to do these things again 🙈

Imperfectpolly · 02/08/2025 11:10

A complete break away from the craziness of normal life.
It can be camping, city break or my favourite is a beach holiday because it feels like the only time all year that I get to rest.

Cattenberg · 02/08/2025 23:22

My ideal holiday would involve seeing somewhere new and exciting and also trying new activities or doing something with a bit of an adrenaline rush. Bhutan was one of my favourite destinations because so much of it was distinctive and beautiful - the landscapes, the architecture and the culture. My then-boyfriend I went hiking in the Himalayas and rode on mules to a spectacular temple called Taktshang Goemba.

I do like fly-and-flop holidays - a few years ago, I went on one to the Canary Islands. Our excellent hotel had several swimming pools and put on very impressive buffets. But I don't find these holidays quite as satisfying. I would have liked to see more of the island we were on, but after one day-tour in a stifling hot coach, my family refused to go on any more excursions. So, several of our days there were practically identical and therefore unmemorable.

TheCurious0range · 02/08/2025 23:23

Relaxation, exploring a different country, new food, often history, undiluted family time, we were like active holidays too. Definitely no cooking or washing up!

Cattenberg · 02/08/2025 23:34

If I'm honest about the reality, all of our family holidays involve at least one argument. My ex used to get very stressed if we got lost - unfortunately neither of us had any sense of direction, so it was inevitable. With my family, it's a combination of being together 24/7 and getting on each others nerves and incompatible aims. E.g. Person A would like everyone to be up and ready early for a family trip to a local market. Person B would like a long lie-in. Person C wants to spend all day every day on the beach or in a swimming pool...

I get this!…. It’s me who ends up getting frustrated, usually due to spending so much time in close proximity to one another! We defo need our space at the end of each day.

A holiday is when you go somewhere other than where you live for a few nights or more for the purpose of enjoying yourself.

Yes, this.

And we all enjoy ourselves in different ways, some don’t mind cooking, some want history and busy exploration, some only want to lie by the pool… but they’re all holidays! :)

You can do city breaks like this with a baby :) That’s how we holiday and we’ve only had make minor changes to accommodate our children.

Howdoesithappenlikethis · 03/08/2025 11:40

Lounging, swimming and eating nice food that I've not had to cook or wash up after. For a long time we went self catering which meant I was up in the mornings making breakfast for everyone then cleaning etc, now we've started to go bed and breakfast so that we eat in the hotel in the morning and then out for lunch and dinner. I don't plan to do any sports whatsoever on my holiday, then again I don't do any sports at home. I think it's individual for everyone what they consider a nice time.

cheezncrackers · 03/08/2025 11:46

I like to immerse myself in another place (whether new or an old favourite), eat good, local food, meet local people, browse in interesting shops, go to museums and other cultural attractions and wander around historic areas.

I also like good weather which, to me, means sunny and between 21-30 degrees C ideally. In winter, I don't mind it being a bit cooler, but I like blue skies and sunshine, I hate grey skies, they make me feel depressed.

I also enjoy speaking my second language, so travel to that country is always very enjoyable for me.

I don't mind SC, because we eat out at least one meal a day and I don't mind making breakfast or a sandwich at lunchtime. I also don't like spending time with other tourists, so big hotels where you're constantly surrounded by them aren't ideal for me, although my kids love a good buffet breakfast and some hotels are great. An AI hotel or a cruise though is my idea of hell.

Basically I like to get away - both physically and metaphorically. Holidays are time out of my normal life and they're my favourite bits of the year.

SpottyAardvark · 03/08/2025 11:52

For me a holiday means quality time with DP. No work. No commitments. Nobody else. Just the two of us. We don’t go on holiday with friends or family and we certainly don’t socialise with randoms we meet while we are away, which is one of the reasons we tend to choose places which are less popular with British tourists. For example, our holidays in recent years have included Bavaria, Cadiz, New England & the Basque Country.

We both work FT and DP has a very time-consuming, very full-on hobby so our time together is limited & precious.
