Travel games for tweens/teens

Hi, we're taking our DSs (13 and 11) interrailing for 2 weeks at the end of August, looking for something to keep us occupied on the trains. They are of course horrified that we won't allow them to be on their phones the whole time. So any travel games you can recommend please?. I'm not sure Uno will cut it for them (or us) anymore.

A pack of cards? We play blackjack, rummy etc on holiday with our now 20 and 17 year old. Although on the train I like to stare out of the window and watch the scenery, that’s one of the joys of train travel (and you may also not end up with a table on the train).

Chameleon (travel version) - Christmas present for my 13yo last year and has been a hit with all families we've played with.

Last year on trains with (then) 12 and 10yo the most popular games were

Exploding kittens or minions
Muffin time
The mind

Plus the classic 20 questions

Monopoly Deal
Dobble
Sussed
Pass the pigs
Scattegories
Taco, Cat…
Hapoy Salmon
Skyjo

Dobble

Cards, learn a few different games ahead (poker with different coloured pasta was a particular favourite, looser washes up!)

BettyStogs · 27/07/2025 12:56

Thanks all, a few to take a look at. We always travel with a pack of cards, and have our old favourites for these, but the new ideas are welcome.

Taco cat goat cheese pizza
Monopoly diced

Awumminnscotland · 28/07/2025 16:55

Sleeping queens
Dragonwood
Monopoly deal
They're all games that are card games that once you get into them you want to play repeatedly

UNO Flip is one of the few variations that we prefer more than the original

We always travel with a pack of cards (Nomination Whist is our favourite) plus dice games. Yahtzee and poker dice are good, but our favourite is Perudo (we decant all the dice into one cup to travel with, to save space - there's no need for everyone to use a cup).

Jaipur is good, but it’s a 2 player game.

mrssquidink · 29/07/2025 08:03

Oh yes, definitely Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. Haven’t laughed so much over a card game for ages, even with two teens who like to pretend they are so over that 😁.

BleuBeans · 29/07/2025 09:57

I will definitely be looking back at the recommendations as we always try to
travel with a few small travel games

Our most recent travel games have been pass the pig (although DD is 8) and magnetic chess - it’s not chess as in king and queen one. It’s where you have 20 odd magnets and you each take turns placing them within a string circle, the aim is to get rid of all your magnets without them attracting. We also love rummikub

House4DS · 29/07/2025 21:09

Pack of cards, travel Scrabble and Gubs have just seen us through 2 weeks.
The teens have a '2 player games' app on their phones which includes things like battleships and yatzee (hasn't actually been used since the ferry crossing but handy nonetheless).

Aliksa · 29/07/2025 21:57

Dd14 surprised me by falling in love with chess recently - I bought a retro mini magnetic travel game compendium which has backgammon, chess, checkers and a few others from Vinted.

LCR is fun, quick and easy and very compact.
My dc also love anomia.
Lots of others too but the majority of them are in bulky boxes not conducive to travelling although of course you could always look at decanting certain ones. Chameleon is good but it’s a big box, from memory I think it’s mainly just cards and would be fine out of the box.
Enjoy, sounds like a fun trip!

SomethingAboutNothing · 29/07/2025 22:12

A couple of previous posters have mentioned our favourite, Monopoly Deal. We also have 4 player games app on our phones which is good if you dont have space to play cards. We especially like colour battle.
