Driving from Calais....need to pick someone up from Lyon airport on Sat am - so was thinking heading of the city centre for dinner a stroll around (not sure what it is like in Mid August?) - or is there some where no more than an hour north of Lyon airport that would be more interesting to stay for the evening?

Either Pérouges which is a medieval town, or Oingt, which is a wine village with honey coloured stone houses. Both are gorgeous.

We loved Lyon when we went (also mid Aug). Evening is perfect for a stroll alongside the riverbank in the centre, maybe stopping at a bar and there are many lovely old fashioned restaurants (bouchon) to try regional dishes.

The old town is lovely with nice places to eat - but roads and parking!!!! We always used to stay at Novotel at Macon Nord which is close enough, has a pool, does nice wine, or Sources Des Fees in Fuisse, just off the motorway.
