Traditional family holidays abroad in July/August

Are hell. Unless you’re super rich and can afford a luxury retreat or you know somewhere temperate off the beaten track,

For the last 10 years or since my kids were school age we have had the usual 2 weeks in Spain//France/Greece/italy. It costs a lot, it’s crowded, the hotels are never as great as you hope and it’s so bloody hot! I’m not doing it again. I like a bit of beach time but like a bit of history/culture but it’s usually too hot to sightsee.

So I’m stopping. No more of it. No idea what to do instead but 3 weeks in the heat in August is off my agenda. Does anyone actually find this enjoyable ?

It's tough I agree. However if you do your research on the right things you can get exactly what you want just by tweaking a few things. For example, southern Europe in the summer is HOT. So what about Bulgaria, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Denmark? I was pleasantly surprised with Bulgaria in particular. Not too hot and very reasonable for the price. Especially if you go for the main brands like Melia and Sol.

Work out what your priorities are. If you want culture and beach consider having your summer holiday at Easter. Then do some long weekends in the summer to break up the 6 weeks.

I hear you but it's about thinking about what you really want and doing that instead of what you think you should do.

We're doing Easter in Italy next year as our summer holiday. Then some last minute UK breaks across the summer.

Yeah we have tried to change it around a few times, going at Whit or October half term but it’s not always easy to get that time off. Some good suggestions there though. Thanks.

I would agree that two weeks in southern Europe in July/August is miserable heat wise. Don’t do it!

loads of alternatives out there though. From Eastern Europe, to Mauritius to north wales, you will find more temperate places in every budget.
