Short haul winter sun

Any recommendations other than the Canaries? We went to Gran Canaria in January and it was JUST warm enough for a pool holiday (low 20s).

Just wondering if there is anywhere else we can go that might be slightly warmer?

Cyprus or Egypt (about 4 hours on the plane, possibly 5 to Sharm el Sheikh).
Would Dubai count as short haul? (Unsure of the flight time,)

I don’t think Cyprus would be warm enough - we went once in April and it was low 20s.

Maderia?

lunaswand · 22/07/2025 11:29

Tunisia, Morocco

Chewbecca · 22/07/2025 11:32

No, it's just not possible!
Caribbean/ Dubai is closest for proper winter sun.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/07/2025 11:34

Dubai, Jordan, Abu Dhabi, Egypt ( won’t go as had a horrible experience) - don’t like Dubai either, but if all you want is warm, flash accommodation and a pool it will fit ok.

Berlinlover · 22/07/2025 11:37

@PropertyD Madeira wouldn’t be any warmer than the Canaries in January. OP if you want heat in January you’re not going to get it in Europe.

TizerorFizz · 22/07/2025 11:48

It’s all about geography! You cannot magic up warm sun in the northern hemisphere within short haul distance. It’s that simple. Dubai is around 6 hour flight. Egypt on the Nile is more interesting.

Hyperion100 · 22/07/2025 11:57

Dubai if you want to go to a shopping centre in the desert.

Egypt if you want to go to a hell hole.

I'd go a bit further and fly to Cape Town.

runwithme · 22/07/2025 12:21

Essourira, Morocca.

lunaswand · 22/07/2025 14:13

Cape Verde if your counting 6 hours as short haul

garlictwist · 22/07/2025 14:17

I went to Malaga in November. It was abut 25 and very pleasant. That's hot enough for me anyway.

May913 · 22/07/2025 14:21

January is impossible in Europe - we had 29 degrees in Cyprus end of October though. Essouria won't be hotter than the Canaries in Jan - it depends if you're set on January. If so then Dubai/Caribbean/Mexico.

Marrakech. Cold at night but day times are lovely.

TizerorFizz · 22/07/2025 16:30

@Hyperion100Whats wrong with the Nile cruisers? We enjoyed ours?

Gall10 · 22/07/2025 16:36

I’ve been to costa del Sol many times in winter months (nov, Jan,feb,March) it’s not warm enough to swim but hardly ever needed a coat in the daytime and usually come back with a tan and a few extra pounds around the midriff! Quick flight and excellent public transport.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/07/2025 17:17

@Gall10 yep it’s often about 19 degrees and sunny on Kate autumn and winter or early spring -just like a very very nice day in April/May in uk -really depends what people want, if you want to be lying out on sun beds and going in pools you are going to be looking at 5 hours minimum - in all fairness I’ve been to canaries at that time and it was also only around 20 to 22 and not always pool weather - so not much in it .

FrenchandSaunders · 22/07/2025 18:33

We’ve spent New Year in Tenerife and it’s been mid to low 20s. Lovely. Just make sure the hotel has a heated pool.
