Slovenia for a summer holiday?

Florabella · 18/07/2025 14:04

Looking at Slovenia as a possibility for next year. It would be me and 2 (possibly 3 teenagers). Possibly a few days in Ljubljana and then on somewhere else. Any recommendations? I won’t be hiring a car so is public transport enough to get round a bit? Thanks

Definitely Lake Bled. Beautiful!

HedyPrism · 18/07/2025 14:06

Do it! Amazing place. None of my recommendations will be up-to-date but I loved Lake Bohinj and Ptuj especially the waterpark.

Lake Bohinj and its waterfall - less touristy than Lake Bled

Florabella · 18/07/2025 14:15

Thanks. How easy is it getting to these places on public transport?

We only did 4 nights and hired a car, but went to Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, Via Ferrata Hvadnik, Bovec & Soca Valley. It's a beautiful area of the country!

I did a few reels on my instagram, if you wanted to check out what we did:

Kranjska Gora, in the north western corner of Slovenia, is beautiful too - you can hire a bike and cross the Italian border on a cycle path, and walk in the Julian Alps to the Austrian border! It’s a ski resort in winter.

If you are not renting a car, probably Bled is the best location so you can have easy access to shops, tours and transport.

We rented a car and didn’t base ourselves in the main area but travelled to different places every day.

Beautiful country; we had heavy rain about 3 times; it was August, overall the weather was good. I remember being a bit worried about lightning, I think some people did get caught in the mountains by lightning unfortunately”z

We stayed here two years ago. It's slightly odd but was excellent value for money (breakfast was fantastic) and the town centre and sights were all within easy walking distance.
You could probably book a tour to Plitvice or anywhere else from Ljubljana.

Bohinj is so much nicer than Bled. It’s a cheap 2 hour bus journey from Ljubljana. The buses are good as Slovenia is so mountainous there’s not many trains.

One day in Ljubljana itself is enough I think. Lake Bohinj over Lake Bled for me (though possibly more of interest in the evenings for teens at Bled). Bovec is a good base for watersports but can't help with public transport I'm afraid

Slovenia is beautiful! We go every summer. Sitting it between Lake Bled and Kranjska Gora. We hire a car so I can’t advise on public transport. Llubjana is nice but there are much more stunning places! We’re cycling into Italy one day this summer and I can’t wait!

Lake Bled !!! We are here now and best holiday ever . It’s the most beautiful place . You can do zip lining , gorge walking , lake swimming , rafting, biking etc .
Lovely restaurants and good value .
Our gang are age 14 to 22 . Loved it !
We skied here twice but summer even better !

Dublassie · 18/07/2025 22:38

Did Ljubljana on the way and heading to Austria in the morning .

Kranska Gora is gorgeous

Kids reading the Beano on the Planica ski slopes
Summer toboggan run

and a day trip to Skojan

enjoy

It's beautiful, and you can definitely get around by bus. lake Bled and Lake Bohinj are both beautiful; Bled is more developed.

The Vintgar gorge, near Bled, is so gorgeous, and actually quite an easy walk.

Have you had a Bled Cake yet?! 😍😍

WorriedMutha · 19/07/2025 09:16

We are going in September for the first time. Lake Bled. No car as we are going with Inghams and doing their tour to Llubjana. Really looking forward to it.

Very easy on public transport. There’s also a company called GoOpti which is like a minibus for tourists all going in the same direction which is cost effective too. We went to Ljubljana, Bled (gorgeous but crazy busy), Trieste in Italy and down to Rovinj in Croatia all on public transport. Fantastic trip

MadridMadridMadrid · 19/07/2025 13:56

We had a successful holiday in Slovenia without a car. It was easy to get a bus from Ljubljana to Lake Bled. It was also possible to get a bus direct from Lake Bled to Ljubljana airport. From memory, for Ljubljana to Lake Bled we bought our tickets at the bus station (but for same day travel). For Lake Bled to the airport I think we just bought tickets on boarding the bus. Ljubljana is only small, so I think two days there is enough.

Florabella · 20/07/2025 07:12

Thanks for all the suggestions, and particularly those who have said it is doable on buses. Time to start planning my holiday to Slovenia I think!
