northern France - somewhere worth making stopover for?

We will be travelling back from South West France and plan to make at least one overnight stop before Calais. We could stay somewhere halfway like Alencon/Le Mans. Or we could make it 2 overnight stops - one near Loire and the other.... where??
If you could stop over between Loire - say near Tours/Amboise - to Calais, where would it be? Either a specific hotel/chambre d'hote / Logis or just a good area to be in.
My only experience of northern France is racing to and from the ferry! Have we been missing any gems?

Anywhere around the Loire is good for a stop. Don't go further north, it gets very dull indeed.
