Driving abroad for first time - tips/confidence boosts please!

I know it's ridiculous as I'm almost 50, but I have never driven abroad either in a left or right hand drive car. I am taking my kids on a short break to Ibiza shortly and it will be cheaper to hire a car than use taxis/transfers - especially as we want to visit a somewhere on the other side of the island to where we are staying.

I am a fairly confident driver, but I am not the most coordinated person in the world. I'm worried my brain will struggle with being on the 'wrong' side of the road. Will I be able to do it? Any tips/advice/confidence boosts?

@Drivingthevengabus You won’t be on the wrong side for the car you are driving though! The steering wheel will be on the left of the car and you will drive on the right! You won’t be driving with the steering wheel against the kerb! It will be natural to have the driving position in the centre of the road, as here.

Get a sat nav. Make sure the car has one. Clock what other drivers are doing at junctions and roundabouts. Copy. Look very carefully when turning left and making any exit from a side road.

I’ve just driven a huge Jeep for 3 weeks in the USA. You can turn right there on a red light if it’s clear. Therefore check if Spain has any oddities like that.

Just thought I'd update! It was - as you all said - completely fine! And I'm feeling proud of myself for going for it.

I'd booked a small manual car but at the car hire desk they offered me an automatic for an extra 20euros so I took that. Eldest teen sat in the front and helped me out.

Only made one potentially hairy mistake turning left - but it was all fine.

Thanks for the encouragement and support 🙂

Fantastic! I’d always go for an automatic, have done manual but auto so much easier.
