Bermuda for a holiday

We booked to go for a week - staying at a friend of a friend's house for a reasonable rate. However, we have been reading more about prices when there and how big the US cruise ships are and starting to think we may have made a mistake.

Has anyone been and had a relaxing time? We usually avoid bucket & spade type trips but thought Bermuda looked quite special.

Been to Bermuda a few times as my Aunt lives there. It is beautiful but tiny and can be quite claustrophobic if you’re there for more than a couple of weeks (21 miles long and a mile wide at its widest point). Yes it’s expensive. It’s really designed for wealthy Americans. My cousin came to visit and couldn’t believe how cheap it was here. Apparently she’d bought a whole bag of fruit and snacks and it was only £28! We laughed when she said she’d bought it at M&S and considered it cheap. She is certainly not wealthy and does an ordinary job in Bermuda.

I don’t think the cruise ships come in every day and only dock at Hamilton in high season April-October otherwise they’re at Dockyard but can’t really comment otherwise. I’ve never really seen them as a ‘problem’ other than blocking the views in Hamilton.

It is a beautiful place with beautiful unspoilt beaches but not a lot else.

Is it safe? Will the weather be ok, late October?

It's hurricane season.
People take their chances - I wouldn't, but that's just me. Get travel insurance and review the coverage carefully.

My work colleague went to Bermuda this year and said how expensive it was. Especially eating out, I think they were spending around $300- 400 dollars a day on food and drinks (2 of them, beers cocktails etc). They went to some really nice places though

I have been 4 times, and love it, but it’s not cheap.

Get a ferry/bus pass, you can’t hire cars there apart from little 2 seaters.

If it’s near dockyard end (which is where we stay), then the buses are crowded at certain times when cruises come in.

Never felt unsafe there. Beautiful beaches, and friendly locals.
