Bologna - where to go on day trips Ferrara or Modena?

Staying in Bologna for 4 nights in September. Will get the train to Florence for 1 day and was thinking of doing another day trip but not sure where. Ferrara and Modena both good and around 30 mins on the train. We like wandering around an old town and historical sites.

We went to the Ferrari museum as it was DH's birthday - he loved it.
We went to Florence as a separate holiday, I think it needs more than a day trip.
But you'll be best to book anything you want to see in advance.

We are going in January and planning a day in Padua as I want to see the Scrovegni Chapel. A good one if you are at all keen on art history
