Trastevere ROME

I’m meeting some international friends in Italy for a holiday. One of our stops is Rome. I’ve been a few times but it’s been many years. They’ve never been. One thing I remember is that the trastevere area in Rome was fantastic for meals out and general vibes. Is it it still? Does anyone have any particular restaurant or street to recommend?

It is still brilliant for meals out although always very busy. No particular restaurant to recommend but there's tons to choose from. My brother lives near Ostiense so we tend to eat down there.

Am I imagining that there is a dolls hospital there? Did I dream that?

I was there a long long time ago, what an amazing place, I wish I was going there again, I hope you have a lovely time x

So probably best to just wander around and choose rather than book? My friends are Aussie and are very much ‘book in advance’ ppl. I feel that in Italy it’s a wander and find a good spot in the moment type of situation. I think they are anxious to be in a position of not finding a decent place with good reviews. From my memory this area is full of amazing eateries with no shortage.

Yeah its heaving with places to eat. If you eat earlier than Italians (before 9pm!) Then it'll be easier to find somewhere.
There will be tons of pizza and pasta and more up market too

DD and I went to a restaurant in Trastevere called Otello. I didn't have any specific intel at the time but we picked it because it had a good TripAdvisor rating and it was great! Fun, great service, felt authentic, not a rip off and she still talks about the stuffed courgette flowers now! Definitely recommend. There was a long queue but really well managed and the host went up and down the queue checking in with people, asking where they were from then spoke to them in their own languages - amazing! The whole area felt cool and interesting. Lucky you - enjoy!

This is at Piazza del popolo which is near the Da Vinci museum in the north of the city.

Oh wow! I don’t know how I feel 🤣 a little creepy but adorable too. Thanks for sharing!

just back from Rome and stayed in Trastevere. We had great pizza at Pizzeria al Marmi - it was v cheap as well - three pizzas, two beers and a soft drink for £35 and the pizza was the thinnest, crispiest I’ve had. Had to queue, but it was worth it. Also had a lovely meal in Dar Poeta

Yes it is good for meals out, and also 15 minutes walk to the centre.

We got on the tram to Trastavere but we kept missing the right stop . We were hungry so we got off the tram and had a drink in a bar doing 2for 1 Margarita cocktails. The waitress had obviously been sampling the goods as she couldn’t walk in a straight line! She directed us to a fabulous little restaurant which was very Italian ( no English spoken) . It was a great night 😊

There is a restaurant in Trastavere called Mamma Eats Roma with an entirely gluten free but wholly Italian menu. I got to eat some foods like Tiramisu for the first time. They also have a non gluten free menu (they have two kitchens!). I have eaten there three times and it was fantastic. May be of zero interest to you OP - although my daughter assured me it was generally excellent and not just for gluten free - but throwing it in there in case any coeliac mumsnetters are reading and interesting. Trastavere is such a fun place to spend an evening, I'm jealous.

DevonDonnie · 13/07/2025 00:23

This is excellent information, thank you. I’m not celiac but know of several ppl who are.
