Cairns in december

As the title says, we are heading to Cairns in December and want to do all the adventure stuff.. So what is a must do? Have been advised to head to the outer reef of the great barrier Reef but it's pricey so my question is, is it worth it?
We have Daintree and Kuranda on the list obviously, and want to do some kind of aboriginal culture tour. Tubing on the river and hor air ballooning have been suggested, what else? We are there for two weeks

Why Cairns?

I second Port Douglas as an area to stay.

Or Palm Cove, also very nice and has a lovely beach, not as far as Port Douglas. But if you want any nightlife, I'd stay in Cairns.

And yes I think the Reef is def worth it, but I love a snorkel & seeing the fish & turtles etc etc.

Spent a lot of time up in cairns, I would definitely recommend staying in port Douglas, it is absolutely beautiful and much nicer than cairns. 100% you have to visit the reef, incredible experience, and you can’t go there without seeing it!

We had a holiday in Port Douglas and absolutely loved it.

If you want to do a reef trip I recommend Sailaway catamaran tour out of Port Douglas, we did it a few years ago with dc that were 10 and 14. We all loved it and it was the highlight of our trip for sure.

Personally I think a reef trip should be top of the list for a visit up there.

I would also stay in Port Douglas over Cairns if you aren’t going there to visit someone specific. It would be like travelling twelve thousand miles to go on holiday in Mansfield.

Cape Tribulation was amazing. I went decades ago but my dd went recently and although there has been more development there it still looked lovely
