Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

@Koulibiak no thanks. I've been to over 75 countries, and many places within those countries, most of which I've loved. So actually those places I haven't enjoyed are a very small few.

So here's to the next 75 countries.

Paris. Unfriendly and dirty.

If you were unable to find lovely friendly Parisians, and beauty in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, then that is on you my friend. 🤷🏼‍♀️

France was dull and the food left a lot to be desired ☹️.

ALL of France??

Rome. Just the most miserable holiday DP
and I have ever had. Cold, wet and miserable (we went in February admittedly,) but we were just inexplicably bored and felt ripped off.

How can you be bored in Rome? Confused

Same here, stayed in a lovely, cool riad in the centre of Marrakech, went into the Atlas mountains to the waterfalls. It was a lovely trip.

Me three. Our Riad was stunning, entrance was through loads of those little alleyways/tunnels filled with cats but then bang! Opulence!
Also went to the waterfalls, and another trip to the desert.
Jardin Majorelle was stunning and 100x better maintained than Kew. While I'm comparing to London, Marrakech has a much lower crime rate. As for those saying the food was bad? There were loads of lovely restaurants!

ETA everyone, including our Riad staff were so so helpful.

Just about everyone who has mentioned Egypt on here has said they had food poisoning, but it's not the food. A Brit who lives in Taba explained it's the extreme heat in summer and how we drink cold water to cool down. The temperature difference upsets our stomachs and them we dehydrate making it worse. What you have to do s drink room temperature water and gradually aclimatise yourself to the extreme heat. This made sense to me as we never had upset stomachs in Egypt at Easter but did in summer.

ilikeeggs · 10/07/2025 21:10

I agree with many of these especially Paris and Naples. I’d also like to add Calgary, I went alone and found there were quite a few dodgy areas and lots of police around. Couldn’t figure out where all the shops were and just felt like there was nothing to do.

IberianBlackout · 10/07/2025 21:13

I trust no Brit that speaks ill of Paris, sorry.

Booked a city break, start getting worried at the reviews thinking I was going to land in some banlieu in the middle of nowhere with a child in tow… get there and it’s a perfectly fine, lovely neighbourhood 5min from the Sacre Coeur.

The dramatics, I swear.

SociableAtWork · 10/07/2025 21:14

Italy 😢 And I was expecting to LOVE it. The scenery was beautiful when you could see through the rain! Mid summer, gorgeous villa, pool, stunning gardens and it was cold and wet most days. And the food was really salty IMO and I thought it’d be a gastronomic delight!

Edit: removing waffle!

MandarinsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 10/07/2025 21:15

I have really loved so many of the places mentioned here, but especially Santorini. The buried village there is one of the best places I have ever been, and the museum is excellent too.

Tunisia - the people are horrid.

I had an amazing time in Tunisia, and the men and women were lovely. We went into the town and had lovely hair cuts and treatments and to the hammam to be scrubbed down and for treatments.

Also the roman ruins were amazimg and our Tunisian guide was so knowledgeable and made it all come alive.

strawberryshortcake1 · 10/07/2025 21:19

The Algarve, scruffy, litter, lots of graffiti and apart from Lagos and Silves, disapointing.

Yep, Paris and even Brussels are a state of mind. I have had amazing times there.

Agreed and I actually think it’s pretty disgusting to say a whole country of people are horrid.

I think Siena is nicer than Florence in many ways, it's more of a working city and although undoubtedly a tourist destination, it's not nearly as crowded.
The Campo is lovely but also the narrow streets and alleys behind it with stylish shops and good restaurants. The cathedral and bell tower are magnificent.
But we used to spend all day at our rented villa with pool and just go into the city in the late afternoon when it was cooler and quieter. And we never went when the Palio was on, it's totally rammed then.

I was going to write this..sienna is much better than Florence….but you still have to go to Florence for day trip to see architecture, art and renaissance
Lucca, if in area, is worth a deviation to visit too

Waitwhat23 · 10/07/2025 21:26

I rather liked Paris. We took the tour buses all around the city to get a handle on where everything was and it was beautiful. We also had a lovely cucumber soup in a random little cafe.

fetachocolate · 10/07/2025 20:49

I've always had a great time in Paris but I love art and also speak a bit of French which changes how people treat you. It's much friendlier than it used to be imo.

I love Paris too and I agree it has slowly become more friendly over the years.

The last time we were there, we got smiles and even someone offering to give up their seat for my elderly mother on the train. What stunned me the most that last time though was that people also tried to speak to us in English - I was not expecting that at all!

The art galleries and architecture alone makes it worth braving any rudeness. I will never forget the look of awe on my then 8 year old son’s face as he recognised famous paintings. Back then he was the noisiest, most disruptive kid in his class (many school meetings!) and I was worried about our trip but he was quietly captivated in the art galleries.

Isle of Man. My kids ( then 15 and 18) took themselves home on the first ferry back to Liverpool! Was kind of weird waving them goodbye, but I understand why they did it. Who in their right mind, drags teens to an Island, not suitable for teens. You may say it’s a beautiful Island and that’s your opinion.

Some teenagers actually LIVE on the Isle of Man. How is the Isle of Man not suitable for them?

Eating out in Italy is often a disappointment…I was told years ago that it’s because historically the best chefs were the Nonna and mamma and eating out just wasn’t a thing for Italians .

I like Bologna as another destination. I always describe it as the cool younger sister of Florence. Also had the best tiramisu I have ever had in my life there.

Lucca is stunning and it's a lovely walk around the city walls.

I haven’t travelled all that much but this thread reminds me of why I don’t really miss it (severely disabled DD prevents travel to a v large degree).

but I strongly disliked - for dirt/general boredom etc:
Barcelona
Malta
New York (thd I was in a bad place emotionally and just in Manhattan)
Florence
Rome (other than the food)
Paris
most of Portugal
South Africa
Genoa
Venice
Athens
Prague

i sound so miserable but I loved/very much enjoyed
Germany - Munich but especially Berlin
Luca
Verona
Milan
Bergen
Copenhagen
Iceland
Wroclaw

Barcelona but maybe that's because we were young and stayed in a dogey bit. My friend was mugged and there were a lot of drug dealers and prostitutes about.

Everyone I know who has been to Egypt has said its a disappointment.

I'm assuming you might have stayed in Ravel...

I went to Santorini about 20 years ago and it was lovely then. Not too busy, very pretty.

Same here. We had a fortnight in Oia in 2001 and it was fabulous - not overcrowded at all. The ancient site of Akrotiri was astonishing - a town covered by a volcanic eruption 1500 years older than Pompeii.

Yes I love Paris. Off in a couple of weeks for a long weekend. Managed to blag free tickets for the Musee d'Orsay as the first Sunday of the month is always free!
Great city.

We (female partner and I) took my mum there for a week in 2005. We had a fantastic time, were treated like queens by all the Tunisians we met and the trips we took to see Roman remains were amazing. We visited an ancient mosque and I spent time speaking French to an imam, who was utterly charming to me and my mum.
