Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Dublin, just not much to do.

Gambia, weather was crap, hotel staff were awful and used to use the equipment so guests couldn’t. Booked an excursion and the bloke was an hour late and took us to a cattle market with emaciated poorly treated cows.
There was also the start of some pretty bad civil unrest when we were there, just awful.

Egypt which has come up on this thread I enjoyed but I was on a tour around the whole country which was brilliant.

Malta - just wasn't enough to do and we were bored ! Beautiful island if you like to sit by the pool so it really depends what you like to on holiday.

Bored, how? I only went for a week and am planning to return because there's SO much I didn't have time to fit in! I suppose you shouldn't go to Malta if you just want to sit around, drink, etc. and not see the sights.

Doggymummar · 10/07/2025 17:49

DappledThings · 10/07/2025 14:22

That was completely the opposite experience I had of Malta! We went for 10 days and explored a different town/ancient site/museum/fort etc every day. Going back this year and there's loads more we want to see.

We only had one afternoon at the pool.

I was there for 12 weeks as a holiday rep loved it so much we got married there. Beautiful island.

ProudSquid · 10/07/2025 17:49

Kardamena in Kos. Ok if you like more fag ends on the sun lounger littered beach than sand. Came home early.

Barcelona - totally overrated. Half a day seeing the 4 main sights then the rest wasting time and dodging pickpockets wondering why everyone loves it so much.

I'm so surprised at the hate for Paris. It's around 30 years since I went a few times and absolutely loved it. Has it changed?

Titasaducksarse · 10/07/2025 17:49

Gran Canaria but specifically Playa del Ingles
It was like something out of a scooby doo show...empty haunted looking shopping centres everywhere. Absolute 70s monstrosity.

Dappy777 · 10/07/2025 17:50

Pretty much everywhere is too crowded nowadays. I often think how beautiful places like Paris and Florence and Oxford must have been in 1900. Until 1900 there had never been more than a billion human beings. Between 1900 and 1960 the population trebled to three billion. It's now eight billion and we're heading for ten. I went to Venice last year and could have screamed there were so many people. It felt like I was suffocating.

Blobbitymacblob · 10/07/2025 17:51

I’m reading about places I’ve been, nodding along to the descriptions but I wasn’t disappointed by any of them - I think I travel with a sort of fascination and curiosity rather than any sort of high expectations.

I’ve been harassed, ill, and even caught up in the outbreak of war once, so I don’t travel for peace and tranquility - that’s what I leave home to escape 😂

Malta is fabulous!! Enjoyed many family trips there and it was the first holiday DH and I went on.

I won't ever go to Malta until they stop shooting summer migrant birds en route to European nesting destinations for fun.
Swallows, swifts, honey buzzards, turtle doves, cuckoos, Montagues harrier, migratory warblers and finches.
Just why?
Lots are already endangered.
Can't tell you how much I hate the fucking miserable bunch of bastards.

autumn1610 · 10/07/2025 17:53

I wasn’t even expecting great things to start with so had a low bar…Lanzarote. One of my friends banged on about how much she loved it there and went every year. Well I wont be going back

Menorca. Just dire. Rude people, awful food, weather wasnt great. Never been so pleased to leave a holiday destination.

I loved Ciutadella in Menorca. I've never had such a relaxing and lovely 5 days.

I love Gran Canaria. I have been multiple times, as there is so much to see and do, plus I always feel really safe there. I have travelled all over the world, but I'd happily go back every year.

The island itself is beautiful up in the hills and the small villages. The playa de ingles area I couldn’t compute! … that was 30 years ago mind.

Sorrento
Tiny beaches so would be no good for sunbathing - very little space with all sunbeds right next to each other and no good for little walks up and down the beach.
Town itself too small to be entertaining for more than 2 days max. Nowhere to walk to because of narrow windy roads.
Didn't find any feasible walks and those that were seemed guarded by dogs according to all trails and similar.
Barely enough exercise to work up an appetite tbh
Food and Pompei good though.

Do you mean you were unable to walk around the town, or that you couldn’t walk in the wider countryside? Did you get the boat to Capri, or a boat/bus to Amalfi ? We are considering visiting there next year, looking at Sant Agnello just outside Sorrento.

No maybe I should though @ThePoshUns.

Funnily enough Dh and I were talking about it yesterday and he doesn't want to go to Barcelona because he thinks he'll be pick pocketed ☹️

We were also discussing whether places have been ruined by tourism; stag do s and instagrammers etc. Anyone been disappointed by a return trip?

We were pick pocketed in Estapona, by two lads one doing the keepy uppy with a football, the other dipping DHs pocket. However, I saw him and as he was so fixated on DH's wallet he didn't see me watching, and before he knew it, he was in a wrist lock. I was concerned that he'd throw said wallet to the accomplice so I tweeked his wrist to get his full attention. Result - wallet returned.

Las Vegas for me. I thought I’d love it and find it really fun but I hated it.

Like a great big Weatherspoons. Hated it.

Kos was too barren I think. Where as Corfu is beautiful lush and green. I love most places in Pembrokeshire but wasn’t wowed by Fishguard but I refused to walk down to the lower part because of my knees!
Most of the few places I have visited abroad I have loved though because I love exploring new places and spend a long time selecting the holiday .Just thought of another one I didn’t like Ibiza , we stayed in Cala longa and I wasn’t very well mentally at the time.

@Everybodysinthehousetonighti was just about to mention Memphis. It’s the most unsafe I’ve ever felt on holiday and Beale Street is just like Blackpool but hotter and more dangerous. Luckily only stayed a couple of days and it was worth it for Gracelands.

Memphis is scary!!

Lavenderfarmcottage · 10/07/2025 18:05

Geeez where is good to go then ?

Planning trip to California Disneyland with child in December - Jan. undecided about other US places to stop at. This thread doesn’t get me too inspired 😆

Agadir, Morocco is the only holiday I have been on and could not get why anyone would go there. We ended up leaving our stuff in the room and booking a place for 2 nights in Taroudant to escape .Taroudant was lovely.

Can you tell more about why you didn’t like Agadir? We’re thinking about going later this year!

This is so interesting, you would think the increase demand would mean higher prices so less travel. I Am not an economist but this has me thinking 🤔 I wonder what the future of these places is.

Agree about Bali which is so congested. Hard to see somewhere like Ubud as a relaxing destination when there’s traffic jams. The beaches aren’t that nice either through most of Bali, not compared to Australia - my home and cultural wasteland ;)

Catsandcannedbeans · 10/07/2025 18:08

Went to Paris with my first partner who spoke fluent French, we had an amazing time! I went back with some friends (one of them had an A level in French) and it wasn’t as good. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t with a local and we didn’t know all the spots, maybe it was because it was years later, but the vibe was off. People were unfriendly the second time and it was dirty. Versailles was amazing though and made my second trip worth it.

OR Disneyland. Went when I was a kid, my dad had saved and schemed and scammed to get us that holiday. We got there and I was petrified of all the mascots. I’m still terrified of them, so my kids will never go to Disney.

Feel like you should have seen this coming when you booked Gambia for a holiday. Was the Four Seasons in the Republic of Congo all booked out ?
