Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Oh nooooo, I’m off there tomorrow for the weekend!!!!!!

My experiences have been entirely different. A simply beautiful region, hope you enjoy!

Bulgaria, in particular Sunny Beach, absolute hell hole! ,dirty grubby, unsafe, complete rip off wouldn't go back if it was offered to me for free

Agree, went there quite a few years ago now but I felt really unsafe there, accommodation was awful as well

I am really on the fence about Malta, the architecture looks lovely and I imagine as a long weekend where beaches are not the be all and end all, it might be fun. But I don't hear great things about the food at all, and that puts me right off. I looked at a Maltese cookery book recently, and it was odd and uninspiring to say the least. Everything seemed to be made with the same five ingredients and one of those was rabbit.

I enjoyed the rabbit stew I had. And the savoury pastries and the broad bean dip.

I don't remember much else particularly about the food but I'm not that bothered about food as a part of a holiday. There was plenty of pasta options everywhere.

As somewhere with tons of places to visit covering 1000s of years of history and really easy to get around Malta is hard to beat. I hardly ever want to revisit places but we are going again this year to see more of it.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/07/2025 16:36

@MyMilchick even lying on concrete slabs on piers for sunbathing! ( sorrento ) Most bizzare .

SunWasHere · 10/07/2025 16:36

Venice in the summer. Unbearably hot and crowded. Been twice, many years apart and both times could not wait to leave.
Its probably lovely at other times of the year but I won’t be racing back

Don't panic. We went earlier in the year, got excellent weather and loved them.

Fingers crossed that it's the same for you.

Thanks so much! I’m not sure where to check for reliable weather results! Someone else in the group I’m going with said it’s going to be 29 degrees on Sunday but weather I’m seeing is 15 degrees!!

Taj Mahal. Just an enormous crowd of people pulling silly poses and wanting to have their photo taken. If you want an unobstructed picture of the building, you have to pay and then queue up for you chance to jump about in front of the camera. Not really sure why, as you won't really see much of the building anyway if you're blocking the view?! But nobody else seemed very interested in the actual building. Once you finally get inside, you're not allowed to take photos. So everyone just rushes through without stopping. I would have liked to spend some time appreciating the exquisite interior, but you're in a long line and it doesn't feel like you're really supposed to stop moving. Then you're out the other side, and can't get back in. Really disappointing. Rest of India is amazing though, which made up for it.

Egypt has the most stunning sights, and incredible food, but the culture is very unpleasant. They way they treat women and animals is just revolting.

Florence I just found a bit 'meh', and was unimpressed with them forcing sad-looking horses to stand in the baking sun all day. I really wish the world would get together and ban tourist carriage rides.

What a shame. I am not a beach holiday person either, but there is so much to see on Kefalonia if you have a car.

Visiting various old towns, Melissani caves with the boat ride underground, wine tasting, National park etc...

Our highlight was seeing the giant turtles in Argostoli harbour :-)

That's really sad you didn't have a good time 😔

Kefalonia is amazing with car hire!! I would go back for that reason.

I was very disappointed in Venice and we only went for a day (was going to multiple destinations in Italy), I found we were actually bored come afternoon.

See I absolutely loved Venice but hated Milan. As soon as you left the hotel it was boiling. I've walked around a lot of hot countries including other parts of Italy but Milan was really something else. The only place I've been that I've got no good memories of.

Fanacapan · 10/07/2025 16:39

Mykonos - went looking for Shirley Valentine and found Gemma Collins!

SwedishEdith · 10/07/2025 16:39

I love these threads as often disagree with so many or think I guessed it would be like that anyway. Finally, visited one place last year that I found underwhelming. I know there's more to see and a day is a snapshot etc but, I don't think I'd rush back to Lake Garda. Well, Sirmione. Just too busy (should have realised). My partner had been before and warned me it was probably not the best of the Italian lakes.

Notjustabrunette · 10/07/2025 16:39

We booked a very cheap last minute holiday to Fuerteventura. Too windy to enjoy sitting out, and our accommodation was fine but not very attractive. What saved the holiday was hiring a car and bikes for a few days. Got to go to some lovely restaurants and managed to find some slightly more sheltered beaches. I wouldn’t go back though.

Zempy · 10/07/2025 16:39

Osaka. As a lone female traveller I was completely unsafe.

We went there about 20 years ago too and couldn’t wait to be on our way up to Luang Prabang, which was far nicer.
Vang Vieng was the name of the town

Yep. Us too. Laung prebang was awesome. I loved the night markets. And here was a lovely waterfall about an hour's drive out of there? We ended up getting stranded at the waterfall when we got pissed and took too much dodgy valium. Haha.
No regrets for visiting Laos as a whole as it was quite wild and underdeveloped back then.

Coconuthotchocolate · 10/07/2025 16:40

Vienna - I felt unsafe (and I’ve travelled the world) and it was overrated.

Paris and New York. Both just busy and unfriendly

Honestly the food was awful and yes, a sort of curried rabbit dish is the star of the show. Otherwise it's a lot of deep fried stuff and very little fruit, veg, cheeses. Exploring different cuisines and food markets is part of my holiday - not on Malta! We were booked to stay a fortnight but we caught the ferry to Sicily after a week to get the hell out of there. But Malta does seem to be like marmite - you either love it or hate it. For me it was the latter.

Yes, I felt uncomfortable and not very safe. And I was bought up in a Middle Eastern country!
This was before the terrible beach attack in 2015.

Me too. Went in about 2011. Me and my friend barely left the hotel because each time we did we just felt so unsafe. We went on a trip to the markets (through Thomas cook) and wa grabbed and shoved into each stall and demanded that we spent money.
The beach was beautiful but we felt all eyes on us and a lovely local actually came over and told us we should watch our stuff because we were being targeted to get robbed! He walked with us back up the beach and helped us get back to the hotel unbothered.

I'm sure it's not all like this but our experience wasn't a nice one.

Was there for 2 weeks and couldn't wait to come home. Many people at our hotel actually got earlier flights home.

Almost everyone I know has hated Tunisia except DH and me. We loved it, but we were away from the touristy beaches, doing camel treks in the desert and looking at Kairouan and El Djem. And it was Ramadan so everyone was very quiet. I think we got lucky. Bet it's a different experience for a woman on her own.

El Djem is incredible!

I worked in Tunisia for 3 months in a tourist resort and thought the locals were some of the kindest most welcoming people ever.

Agree. Drying streaks of dog piss on every pavement

I loved El Djem too. Incredible that it's less well known than so many other Roman sites, but so perfectly preserved.

Agadir, Morocco is the only holiday I have been on and could not get why anyone would go there. We ended up leaving our stuff in the room and booking a place for 2 nights in Taroudant to escape .Taroudant was lovely.

Oh no, poor you. I went there with a group of people who had been to many places on holiday and we nicknamed it Agadire. Awful place. I generally disliked Morocco as a whole but Agadir was the worst place we went to.

My choice too. Massively over rated

Crikeyalmighty · 10/07/2025 16:45

@lifesalive now I love Stockholm - but I know it really really well as we used to go a lot when we lived in Copenhagen - thing is with Copenhagen and Stockholm lots of things are actually quite cheap but eating out and drinking out isn’t - which is I guess is what tourists mainly see - they are also better paid than uk- I think these places are actually better to live than visit and rely on UK money

Maldives. Grinding poverty in Mali and horrible conditions/rubbish on the service islands. Bored shitless after 3 days, crap food. Weird sense of menace not helped by DH’s monologue about it being an OBVIOUS PLACE for an Islamic terror attack, being full of western tourists who had NO WAY OUT. Most relaxing I don’t think. 🙄

Agree with this. Maldives was the most bored I have ever been on holiday.
