Ryanair online check in- cannot get passport to scan

We’re flying to France next month and the only flight that worked for us is with Ryanair. We’re trying to check in online and no matter how much we try we cannot get the app to successfully scan and upload our passports. We’ve watched YouTube vids and tried holding the phone upside down and nothing works. Has anyone else had the same problem, and how did you manage it?

I've never heard of this! I just enter passport number and DOB and that's it. Is it for certain nationalities?

God this thread has brought back an awful memory of a recent holiday where I flew with Air Europa, never heard of them before but just booked the tickets that were available at the time and it was these lot

They sent a boarding pass by email but then said it wasnt a boarding pass and you had to pick it up at the airport, so even though we didnt have check in luggage, we still had to queue up for nearly 2 hours as the airport was rammed and they had hardly any desks, and nearly missed our flight it was unbelievable.

Never ever ever again will I fly with them

sorry OP but all of this online, not online, its a minefield when its not working correctly.

I don’t know, we haven’t flown since before Covid and never with Ryanair. We could check in on the day at the counter but that’s another £50 ish quid each. You have to made sure there’s no glare or shadow on the page but that’s really tricky when you’re trying to scan it

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app? Sorry not very helpful but might work

Restart the app. I had that a while ago it was just playing up

I had the same problem with uploading a passport photo to open a bank account, I just couldn't get it to accept the photo however I tried

No help to you but in the end I had to start the process again with my driving licence

Have you tried outside in natural light but not sunny?

Think we’re going to give up for tonight. We’ve tried re-installing the app and that didn’t work. Its difficult to get the passport to lay flat and to not get a shadow when you’re hovering your phone over it. H is just getting frustrated so we’ll try again tomorrow.

Travel with RA all the time and you only upload your passport number and date of issue / expiry etc. .

Is your phone in a case or does it have some kind of cover on it? If so, remove it and try again.

I spent about 20 minutes last week trying to scan my passport to renew my drivers license, I couldn’t get it to work at all until I removed the phone case, then it worked first time.

It still had the cover on, didn’t think to remove it 🤦‍♀️. Will give that a go tomorrow, great suggestion, thank you.

Login on the website and key it in? Did it last week, didn’t attempt to scan it.

Is this a new thing? I flew Ryanair a couple of months ago and just typed in my details.

Can you do that, either in the app or on the website?

It seems to be a requirement for people with non-EU passports, which is a good thing (when it works) as we always used to have stand in a queue for a pointless passport check.

Have you tried just logging onto the desktop version , you key the details yourself rather than scanning the passport then .

DH ended up logging in on our desk top computer and just typed the info in (we didn't realise that was an option) so all appears to be sorted now. Thanks everyone for the advice.

We flew to Spain with RA a few days ago and there was no uploading of anything, just entered password numbers.
We use them once or twice a year and I have never come across this

I have a new blue passport but my H still has a few years left on his EU one. On the Ryanair app when you check in it says you need to scan and upload a copy of your passport, but when you log in on a normal computer you only have to type in your passport number.

Just did it after many attempts. Take cover off phone and have the phone touching the passport, not hovering above it.
