Honeymoon - Rome or Athens?

Hi all

Looking for some advice. Never been to either Rome or Athens but we are thinking about a short 4 day honeymoon next September 2026.

we only want 4 days close to UK as don’t want to leave our toddlers too long and will book a nice family holiday to Mexico to go separately but we want somewhere just for us 2 for a few days

we thought Rome or Athens as close. I haven’t been to Italy before. Wanting something to sightsee/ history and wander around nice shops cafes restaurants etc.

which would you recommend has the most to do/see and be best for a short honeymoon?

thanks

For aimless wandering and a bit of sightseeing I’d go to Venice over Athens or Rome. I find Rome a bit “hard work” and much prefer the northern Italian cities.

Athens is great but best when you’ve got time to pair it with a trip out to one of the Greek islands.

Definitely not Athens! Italian cities for your bill. I’d choose Florence with bus trip out to Sienna, or Rome if you want somewhere larger. Athens is sprawling, traffic, great problems with crime. Great for specific archaeological trips but not what you’re thinking of in your description

Not Athens. It's quite a noisy, dirty city. Of those two, definitely Rome - lots to see, strolling around, lots of good food and cafes for watching the world go by. You can stroll along the Appian Way or go out to Villa d'Este and visit the gorgeous Tivoli water gardens if you want a break from the city.

But I'd go to Budapest if you've not been. Most romantic city in the world, imo.

Rome . My favourite city. So much to see.

Rome - my favourite city. (and I was cabin crew for 20+ years!)

Rome, definitely. I love Athens, but it takes some getting used to.

Rome. I liked Athens but so much more to do in Rome.

I like them both, but would choose Rome - my favourite city in the world, and I've been 8 or 9 times since I had my honeymoon there!

Poppybetty · 07/07/2025 14:09

Been to both and they both have great sights to visit. But in between the sights Athens is very squalid, Rome is much nicer.

Athens is a shithole. Rome definitely
