Ideas for family holiday to celebrate 50th

Looking for ideas to celebrate 50th Birthday with family of 4- (2 x adults, 2 x children boys aged 14 and 9)

We could go to circa 15K, if really pushed it, but this would be the most we have ever spent on a holiday

Naturally people say, Florida, but I'd also quite fancy West Coast perhaps. Or even somewhere totally different say South Africa.

Can anyone recommend what they have done and it's worked really well

South africa or western Canada are both fabulous with plenty for your age children and you could do it in budget.

How long can you be away for? I would look at Thailand if you haven't already been you could stay in some amazing luxury places and do some travelling around

lotsofthingstolearn · 06/07/2025 17:54

You know I've thought of Thailand but honestly wouldn't know where to begin! Or what there is to do

Same with Canada!

Australia!

What time of year? does £15k include spends?

Alwaystired2023 · 06/07/2025 18:07

You could fly in to Bangkok and stay 2 nights in a super fancy hotel with rooftop pool etc then fly down to Phuket and go to phi phi or krabi do some island hoping but have an amazing beach hut for your base then back home via Bangkok stay in a diff hotel and area - would be amazing and you could fit more or less in depending on the amount of time you are going etc

lotsofthingstolearn · 06/07/2025 18:09

Sorry yes, summer holidays

Oops sorry cross post

I would look at Trailfinders or Stubborn Mule/Families Worldwide for some ideas

Meredusoleil · 06/07/2025 18:12

With that budget I would have done a Caribbean cruise as well as Disney World. Instead, we're doing a Greek islands cruise.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/07/2025 18:12

We went to Iceland to mark my 50th with teens. Winter though.

AvidJadeShaker · 06/07/2025 19:11

My boys absolutely loved to cruise at that age and we found cruise and stay or stay and cruise holidays worked really well as it feels like two holidays with only one lot of travel.

Specialnameforanoutingthread · 07/07/2025 18:12

What do you all enjoy doing? What is fun for us may be a nightmare for you. What elements have been successful in the past? We like a DIY 'travelling' holiday and really can't do more than a couple of hours on a couple of days on a lounger by the beach or pool.... But that might be terrifying for you.

You literally have the world to choose from.

cornflourblue · 07/07/2025 18:36

Look at Trailfinders for ideas of itineraries for a big holiday like this. They have so many options from independent trips to guided tours.

Depends what you like to do as a family - adventure/outdoor activities, fly and flop, culture, safari/wildlife?

MiddleAgedDread · 07/07/2025 19:20

You need to narrow it down to what sort of holiday you’d all enjoy……do you want a package, are you wanting to book flights, accommodation, car hire etc separately, are you outdoor activity sort of people or museum and city sort of people, or lying on a beach and never leave the resort sorts?? How far and wide have you travelled before and how far out of your comfort zone are you willing / wanting to go?
