Extremely embarrassed but my sibling has bought me a ticket to meet them in America. We haven’t seen each other for years
last time I flew economy- I needed a seat belt extender.
They travel a lot so have lots of air miles so booked for me to come out business class. But on a video I saw it looked like the seat belt was more like a car one?

would I need an extender or are the seat belts longer/different.

TIA for any advice

You won't be the first that needs an extender in business. They will have a solution. Try not to stress and enjoy it!

NeedForSpeed · 05/07/2025 18:42

Never flown like that, but I quietly asked for an extender on a flight last year as I got on the plane. They asked for my seat number and quietly brought it to me a few minutes later, all folded up and passed it discreetly. No fuss, no problems. Don't be embarrassed, just be comfortable.

Some business class have three point seatbelts. They are also generally longer too. You could ring/google the airline to check?

HeyItsPickleRick · 05/07/2025 18:53

The few times I’ve flown business or first (generally BA) the belts were the same! But different routes I suppose will have different planes. Easiest thing is to ring and ask but I don’t think you need to worry, there will be a provision.

MellowPinkDeer · 05/07/2025 18:54

When I’ve flown BA business it’s only the rear facing seats that have the car seat type harnesses , the forward facing have lap belts so maybe just request a forward facing seat? Saying that, I’m sure it will be ok and they will have extenders so don’t worry. Enjoy the comfort!

TableTopTree · 05/07/2025 19:12

It depends on the plane type, in the club suites, there is a standard lap belt, with a shoulder strap that attaches to one side of the lap belt ( so it looks like a car seatbelt).

You may struggle a bit tbh, I'm not sure they do extenders for the shoulder strap, and both need to be done up for taxi/take off/landing.

You can get away with just the lap belt over your blanket while you're sleeping if the seatbelt sign goes on mid flight.

The old herringbone configuration just has standard lap belts in CW, but I don't think BA operates these on transatlantic routes anymore.

cheesehater · 05/07/2025 19:57

thanks. I couldn’t ring up but I am reassured that you think there is a solution.

if it helps it’s a Boeing 787-9

I am travelling with my parent and we have the pair of seats next to the window

Ok, so that isn't a Club Suite (disappointingly, as they're amazing!). They only have one seat by the window, with pairs in the middle - 1-2-1 configuration.

Is one of you facing forwards, and one backwards? Sounds like the old herringbone configuration, so (I think) will just be a lapbelt.

Where did you see the 3 point (car seatbelt) belt pics? These are only in the Club Suites AFAIK.

TableTopTree · 05/07/2025 20:25

I appreciate you may not want to post your flight details here OP, but if you put your flight number into https://www.seatguru.com/ you can see the configuration.

This info will help people give you advice about the seatbelt type.

The make/model of plane isn't helpful by , as they can all be configured differently.

I would bet my house there is a ready solution, no fuss. Please don’t worry, you will not be the first or indeed the last person that may need this.

cheesehater · 05/07/2025 20:40

Thanks @TableTopTree
if it’s a laptop belt I guess the standard extenders would work.

I think I was just trying to look on YouTube.
Ive tried your link and it says my flight can’t be found so I will have to double check with my sibling!

I have travelled business class with BA and not needed an extender yet I did in economy, for me, it’s one of the reasons to pay for business class. The seats are bigger so I guess the belt is bigger too.

Im flying to Boston in a few weeks via Dublin but there are no business class seats on the flight to Dublin so I plan to just ask the attendants at the door for an extender as I get on. The flight is less than an hour so hopefully I won’t be too uncomfortable in a regular seat!

Nushi21 · 06/07/2025 01:05

What’s a seat extender? Do you mean belt extender?

I just flew LHR to YVR Club World (today!) with 3-point seatbelt and they gave me a seat belt extender which worked fine. BA customer service have told me all flights/seats have extenders available.

enjoy your trip!

MrsPositivity1 · 12/07/2025 03:17

Hi, if you wanted to you can buy an extender on Amazon https://amzn.eu/d/eec0IVj

Samiloff · 12/07/2025 03:34

I just Googled "BA business class seatbelt extender".

It says "British Airways provides seatbelt extenders for business class passengers who need them. If you require a seatbelt extender in British Airways business class, simply ask a flight attendant when you board the plane, and they will provide one for you."

I wouldn't bother - most airlines won't let you use your own belts for safety reasons. They all supply them.

chicola · 12/07/2025 12:04

Don’t worry, they will check out who boards and will discretely get you an extender if needed. Enjoy!
