Do you consider £275 a night a very expensive hotel?

We are looking to stay at a small family run hotel. It's £275 a night. We can afford it but don't usually spend much more than £150 a night on a room.

The hotel is unique in some respects in that it's in a converted castle and has beautiful views and a lovely outdoor pool. Weather permitting of course.

In the uk I wouldn’t expect somewhere overly nice on £250 a night.

😮😮😮

No. Expensive is £575 + in my mind. It's quite specific, not sure why!

evtheria · 18/02/2026 17:54

We usually take a triple/family room: yes, that would be expensive for us. Edit: I don’t mean therefore I think it’s overpriced, it’s just out of my budget!

I would say ‘expensive’ ….not ‘very expensive’

Agreed.

We tend to go abroad and stay at airbnb's for £100 or less a night generally. £275 is expensive but there are certainly plenty of places that are even more expensive. We have paid £275 a night for a couple of nights at a 5* hotel in Gran Canaria with breakfast and dinner included in a few months but it's a one off and the rest of the time out there we're in places nearer to £75 a night.

No medium really.

It’s more than I usually spend on hotel rooms, but within the realms of what I’d be willing to pay for a short 1-2 night stay as a treat.

Hotels are just a lot more expensive than they used to be.

Depends where - central London or New York, not at all. Hotel in Leeds, yes

ImPamDoove · 18/02/2026 20:45

That’s really not expensive. Hotels are overpriced imo, you’re paying for all the extras that you may not even use.

dudsville · 18/02/2026 20:47

I have friends who would happily pay this, but as much as I love the sound of their accommodation, I just can't spend that kind of money on a hotel.

reversegear · 18/02/2026 20:48

We stay in the pig hotels as a treat that’s about 350-400 depending on the room but that’s a special treat, so I would pay 275 for a lovely country house hotel.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 18/02/2026 21:03

Yes. I mostly holiday alone, so I try to find hotels with single rooms and aim for £80 a night maximum. I don't care if there's a bar, swimming pool, sauna, squash court, cordon bleu restaurant, room service, mini bar, tennis court or spa. I want a clean room, a comfortable bed, a good-sized shower cubicle and someone on reception all night.

PensionMention · 18/02/2026 21:28

I would consider average as the days of really cheap hotels are over.

DelinquentSnails · 18/02/2026 21:55

It all depends where you are, doesn’t it? You’ll get a lovely boutique hotel on a Greek island for that. It’s a nice hotel in a lovely town to break up a car journey in France. A clean, well located but very ordinary hotel in London and depressingly basic in certain cities at certain times of the year (looking at you, Rome.)

minnienono · 18/02/2026 21:56

It’s expensive for us but not high end.
