Do you consider £275 a night a very expensive hotel?

We are looking to stay at a small family run hotel. It's £275 a night. We can afford it but don't usually spend much more than £150 a night on a room.

The hotel is unique in some respects in that it's in a converted castle and has beautiful views and a lovely outdoor pool. Weather permitting of course.

We paid £300 a night in Cardiff when we went to see Ed Sheeran and so I would say that’s expensive coz obviously hotels push up the prices for these events. You can probably get it much cheaper going direct .

That sounds worth it.

I’m pretty sure we have paid this for a pretty average hotel within the last couple of years . We don’t stay in hotels often and recently they seem very costly .

mjf981 · 29/06/2025 23:35

Wow. There aren’t many people that could pay 275 a night for a hotel room. Some, sure, but for the majority in the UK it would be an extravagance. So to me it seems expensive.

stayathomer · 29/06/2025 23:36

We live in terrifying times if anyone doesn’t consider that expensive

Evolutionarygoals · 29/06/2025 23:47

It's expensive to me, I've never paid anywhere near that, but I recognise that it's at the lower end of fancy these days. I think if I was staying somewhere that pricy I'd expect some nice facilities and so would want to be staying at least for a couple of nights to make the most of them, which obviously bumps up the cost considerably.

It's an odd question really though. You must know that "expensive" depends on many things, not least of which is what someone earns. Are you really asking if you're being frivolous to consider spending that much? If so then I'd say, assuming you can afford it, maybe it is frivolous, but what's life without a little frivolity? I hope you have a lovely holiday.

My daughter just booked an Air B&B, one night £250, in Margate for a gig. Everywhere sold out due to this event.
I found a Travelodge nearby £69. In the time it took for me to message her the price, they'd upped it to £209.
Travelodge do that, up the price when in high demand. There's no facilities even for that price.
Rip off Britain.

Lardychops · 30/06/2025 00:09

For somewhere relatively comfortable and nice - which at that price you’d expect it to be - perfectly reasonable if it’s within your budget

We have had ‘special nights’ away/hols where we have paid between 100- 750/ 900 a night in UK/ Europe and beyond. And each and every time expectations have been exceeded - bit only because I have done the research.

If you are not sure about the costs do the research - make sure the experience matches the cost and do comparisons etc

SpookyMcTaggart · 30/06/2025 02:58

Yes that's pricy. I'd be looking for two nights for that price. We've stayed in some very good hotels in the UK and Europe for a lot less, though usually not at peak times. Prices vary dramatically even within cities, and price doesn't always seem to correspond to quality - there are lots of bargains around if you do your research.

Pennyforyourthoughtsplease · 30/06/2025 03:02

Average. It depends where and what it is, and obviously what you're used to!

I hope that wasn't for Saturday and the gig that got cancelled.

TeamGeriatric · 30/06/2025 07:48

When I really rack my brains I think we often pay more than that, I don't purposefully look for places in that price bracket, but our preference is for a hotel where all 4 of us can sleep in a single room, so they are never the cheapest room in a hotel. Vienna was about that price and everywhere else, apart from our Premier Inn stay in London, was more expensive.

RedPanda2022 · 01/07/2025 21:40

Depends where it is, generally I am a cheapskate though so it sounds expensive if you stay multiple nights,,,,

dottiedodah · 11/07/2025 13:58

Well we are paying £300.00 for a night at the Travelodge Edinburgh. Right in the centre so no need for taxis at least.Family occasion for DD.That was the cheapest option .Most expensive £1700 per night !No idea what you get for that though

8isgreat · 11/07/2025 14:15

I don’t think it’s particularly expensive, even though we generally don’t ever spend more than the 150 per night range, because we are fine with what that type of hotel offers.
I wouldn’t call it particularly expensive because I’m familiar with the general hotel prices you find around the world.

Hothothothothothotlovingit · 11/07/2025 14:26

I often stay in £300 plus a night hotel suites but, I never pay that. I always wait til last minute to book, sometimes the same day.

Not every hotel does this though. I wouldn’t pay £275 a night but if it’s shared and you love it and you can afford it why say no?

fussychica · 11/07/2025 15:55

It's expensive to me but we usually self cater. We do stay in Paradores in Spain and pushed the boat out last year on the best hotel in Salamanca but it still wasn't that expensive.

boobot1 · 11/07/2025 15:57

No sounds average and a good price for something unique.

Tinytigertail · 11/07/2025 16:01

It's to the higher end of what we would spend usually, but it sounds amazing, so it would be something i'd book for a long weekend or a birthday treat etc.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 11/07/2025 16:10

I would expect four nights with breakfast for that but I’m a cheapskate.

Weerit · 11/07/2025 16:37

It depends on location and timing we paid £300/night for Amsterdam midweek and that was nice but not special. Hanoi we paid £95 and it was amazing, last week £145 in Belfast was pretty good. Prices have increased enormously since the pandemic and I’ve seen the same room in Brighton charged anywhere from £125 - £450 and I felt sorry for the people who paid £450 because it was good but not that good.

Nowhere near expensive. The cheapest rooms at some properties I stay in are £600 per night. £275 sounds like a step above Travelodge.

LucyLoo1972 · 18/02/2026 17:06

my husband is totally mean so we never stay anywhere nice.

but no - that sounds reasonable to me.

I regret the experiences we missed out on becasue of his meanness and I went into psychosis becasue of the stress it put on me - long story!

go and enjoy it

I would say ‘expensive’ ….not ‘very expensive’
