Algarve hotel recommendations

We're looking at options for summer 2026 and we've never been to the Algarve. We will have our two teens with us (18 and 15) and what we'd ideally like is:

  • 4 or 5 star
  • non-rowdy vibe (so nowhere with a kids disco, aqua aerobics, ball games in the pool, loud music by the pool, etc)
  • great gym
  • pref. walking distance to a charming, authentic Portuguese town (not a soulless resort)
  • access to paths, a promenade, etc for running/walking.

Does anyone know of somewhere that would fit the bill? We don't need AI as we like to eat out in local restaurants and we don't play golf.

We went in May and based on what you’ve said I would avoid Albufeira old town because 1. It is quite rowdy with stag and hen dos completely taking over in the evenings especially and 2 There were 99 steep steps down from our apartment hotel to get to the beach, to the point we couldn’t face the walk twice a week in the heat.

Having said that, we stayed in Cerro de Mar Atlantico apartment hotel in Albufeira which was lovely because the owner had many hotels within walking distance and we were allowed to access all of their facilities. This meant when one pool was busy we just went to another! No pool games, no balls/floats etc allowed.
We had a lovely week but like I said … wasn’t impressed with rowdy drunken parties and the steps everywhere were insane.

Visiting Benagil caves was a real highlight for me - Portugal is stunning!
