We had our first abroad holiday this year - we have two kids with ASD (12 & 7) and it was lovely - went much better than expected.

We are looking at destinations for next year now but I’m feeling overwhelmed by choice.

This is what we’d like:

Hot in May as ideally we’d go May half term
Basic water sports - snorkelling, body boarding etc
Easy boat trips - an hour or so - no longer
Access to bland food as both kids have ARFID
Safe environment

Most likely an AI resort as both boys adore the water so that is more suitable than a city break.

Flight no more than 4 hours
airport transfer no more than an hour

Thanks in advance - happy to answer any questions

Madeira - my sen dc loves it there. Lots of nice AI, lovely beach front, very friendly people, have been Oooh 4 times. Not a bad time of year to go, always good weather.

Also it’s mostly just me and the two dc and it’s incredibly safe.

My SEN teen really liked Atlantico Mare in Cyprus. The swim up rooms were great when she wanted to chill but still be able to swim. The food was great. Chilled place in the evening too, most families play cards/Uno whilst having a drink before/after dinner. They have a movie night outside where you sit on bean bags to watch. They have some watersides too.

Malta. Its been a commonwealth country so lots of foods will be familiar (not just full English breakfast , like on the Costas of Spain, but things like biscuits).

I would do canaries. We did that in May with autistic children. Buffet breakfast and dinner and kitchenette for having safe food the rest of the time. You are always close to the sea there for water sports. Would love to go to Madeira like pp mentioned, but can't give personal recommendation.

@MrsMoastyToasty DH fancies Malta so I’ll have a look.

@HarryVanderspeigle canaries does appeal for the reasons you state. I’ll check out the options. Do you recommend a particular island?

We worth to Gran Canaria. Kids loved the hotel pool, beach and boat trip. With older kids I would probably go to Tenerife or Lanzarote for more activities.

Thank you ❤️
