Friend has arrived at Nairobi airport. Bags left in London (half the flight).
Connecting flight tomorrow morning which will leave before bag makes it over.
Gorilla trekking tomorrow, and all stuff in suitcase.

Does anyone know the airport area well re: shops? She is going to look for clothes to trek in / needs some boots or sturdy trainers etc.

A sports type shop would be best?? Is there stuff in the area? Or how and where is best to go for shopping?

The airport was pretty basic from memory, but this was more than 10 years ago. There is a shopping mall pretty close by looking at Google.

Google. Huge mall in walking distance, open till 4am

marcopront · 28/06/2025 00:07

I am not sure what some people are searching for but there is no shopping mall within walking distance of Jomo Kenyatta international Airport. There is possibly one near Wilson but your friend won’t be there.

What time is she leaving for the trek tomorrow? (Actually today East African time)
The safari company should be able to take her somewhere

I wouldn't walk anywhere in Nairobi at 4am!

No I wouldn’t either
I wouldn’t walk at JKIA at any time though

Her best place is probably Decathlon at the Hub in Karen or Two Rivers in the morning.

Xiaoxiong · 28/06/2025 00:50

I agree - taxi to stay at the Holiday Inn hotel at Two rivers mall in Ruaka and then buy stuff in the morning. There is a Giordano, Decathlon, another sports shop I can't remember the name of, pharmacies for toiletries etc.

Xiaoxiong · 28/06/2025 00:51

Though it will depend on what time the connection is in the morning, I guess!!

Sorry but I am really intrigued as to what mall you found?

summerlovingvibes · 28/06/2025 16:52

@marcopront couldn't find the mall that was allegedly open until 4am. So they got a couple of hours kip, got their connecting flight to Rwanda and are now on the hunt for stuff there before they start trekking tomorrow.

Having been at JKIA many times, I have no idea what mall was being referred to. Knowing the area the I cannot imagine there being a mall there either and definitely not one open in the early hours of the morning selling clothes for trekking.

There is more chance of finding an appropriate shop in Rwanda and the people they are doing the trek with will be able to help.
