How many long haul trips a year do you take?

For leisure, not work. We are thinking of doing three this year and then a few hops over to Europe.

One long haul, around 2-3 short haul and one UK holiday typically

AvidJadeShaker · 23/06/2025 11:13

Usually 3 and 4 or 5 short haul trips. This year is Seattle/Alaska, China and then Miami. Last year was Mexico, New York and Qatar. The year before LA, Cambodia/Vietnam and Florida.

TabbyM · 23/06/2025 11:21

None, going on holiday by train next month

although most people I know have kids which will skew the statistics a bit, I don’t know anyone that regularly goes long haul

I don't know many people who do not, so really depends on our frame of reference. I think most people in our (middle class, salary earners, nobody super wealthy) friendship circle do long-houl yearly or every other year at least.

Similar sort of circle here, most of our friends/colleague don't, they tend to stay in Europe, with one exception that I can think of, generally those that do it tends to be once every few years and UK/Europe in between.

Piratejenny99 · 23/06/2025 12:35

None since pre kids (2011) and around one per year for a few years before that. We do one short haul holiday in Europe (1 week) and a few UK weekends etc per year. Our travel budget is around 10k per year which I think is pretty healthy but no chance of it paying for several long haul trips per year!

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 23/06/2025 16:16

Just the one as DH only has 20 days AL, and we like 3 weeks if we're going long haul.

reluctantbrit · 23/06/2025 19:10

Last was in 2023 and the next will be hopefully 2026.

I find long haul flights exhausting but love the location so we compromise. Also I have a dodgy knee which means I prefer business class instead of economy as that would mean 2 days with a stiff knee each side.

RaininSummer · 23/06/2025 19:19

None ever.

whitecarmcr · 23/06/2025 19:24

Never been outside Greater Manchester 😁😁

LeedsZebra90 · 23/06/2025 19:30

We do a trip to the states once a year - i spent most of my childhood living there and it's more like going home for a visit than a holiday so not purposefully long haul. Other than that I can't actually remember the last time I left Europe.

Jeevesnotwooster · 23/06/2025 19:31

Averaging about one every 5 years.

Used to do loads as a child unfortunately.

NotMeNoNo · 23/06/2025 19:34

Twice in my entire life (USA). A few trips to Europe. We prefer UK holidays and don't have an unlimited budget. We don't have family abroad to visit though.

EveryKneeShallBow · 23/06/2025 19:34

Never flown for leisure. Never plan to.

MinnieMountain · 23/06/2025 19:41

I’ve been on one long haul trip in my life. Thinking of going to India for my 50th birthday. That will be it.

Takoneko · 23/06/2025 20:05

We did an 8 year stretch where we didn’t fly at all between Dec 2015 and March 2024. We then did one long haul trip to Japan in 2024, one in 2025 and have one planned for 2026. We will probably go to Japan annually for at least the next few years. We’re making our way around the country by bullet train and still have lots of places left to explore there. We did about 3,000km by train on our trip this April.

We try not to fly anywhere else for leisure though. We quite like a trip by train so that suits us fine. We’re taking a short haul flight this summer (and then travelling onwards to two more countries by rail) but we generally travel by train.

Port1aCastis · 23/06/2025 20:38

When I was a child we used to do long haul two or three times a year as my Mum had a lot of work in the States. Went back to Washington DC last year and enjoyed it. This year if DH can wangle it I'm going to South America with him on his work trip in September although at present the world seems volatile and I'm thinking I would rather stay home.
Why don't you know this OP or are you stealth bragging?

Junaluma · 24/06/2025 07:10

I usually average at around 2 holidays long haul per year, very occasionally do 3 long haul holidays a year but that’s rare. We do about 3-4 European breaks a year as well.

pontivex · 24/06/2025 07:37

We live in Aus so maybe 2x a year back to UK. 1x holiday e.g Fiji or Indonesia (but that’s medium haul here) and 1x visit to the US to see my godchildren.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 24/06/2025 07:38

Long Haul is so expensive now so we tend to do one euro holiday a year ( city) and a couple of uk ones. Plans for canada in 3 years…..

DisplayPurposesOnly · 24/06/2025 07:46

I'm in my 50s and I have had five long haul holidays in my lifetime. One more planned (in my head), possibly two.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/06/2025 07:46

I’ve done one long haul leisure trip in my life, I think, went to Canada with my parents in 1975. But had to do quite a lot of work trips to the US in the past, lived over there for a couple of years so did tourist stuff there during that time. Only one US trip in the last 20 years though, the internet did away with the need for work trips.

DH can’t do long haul nowadays but there’s so much we’ve still not seen in the U.K. and Europe.

reversegear · 24/06/2025 07:48

Two this year, one as holiday and one as business but it’s been ages since I’ve long hauled.

LindorDoubleChoc · 24/06/2025 07:53

Lol at the bragging!

I've done 3 long haul trips in my entire life. One was last year and I disliked the 16 hour flight so intensely, I doubt I will ever do it again.

Imicola · 24/06/2025 08:26

None. I find flying pretty stressful nowadays, and i sometimes need to travel for work. So when it comes to holidays, we usually try not to fly for a combination of ease and environmental reasons.

anyolddinosaur · 24/06/2025 08:47

Never more than one and thinking of stopping entirely. When we fly we carbon offset https://gaiacompany.io/best-carbon-offset-programs/
