How many long haul trips a year do you take?

For leisure, not work. We are thinking of doing three this year and then a few hops over to Europe.

One most years as DH has a conference every year in the States/Mexico/Caribbean and we turn it into a holiday.

Sometimes we'll do another long haul for a holiday but frankly I'm in my 50s and I find the jet lag takes it out of me. Also we live somewhere where we have to fly internally to get an international flight and generally have to arrive the night before and arrive too late to get the flight home and have to stay another night. So it eats into annual leave.

If I lived right next to Heathrow I'd probably take more!

Comedycook · 23/06/2025 09:51

Usually none but I have done one this year which was unusual for me.

greencartbluecart · 23/06/2025 09:52

There is data available op

like 15% of people take 70% of flights so you know you are unusual / an outlier

beguilingeyes · 23/06/2025 09:53

We're going to Japan this year and I think this might be our last long haul. It's just too exhausting (I'm 64 now). We may stick to Europe in future, preferably by train as it's less painful than flying.
That's if Trump hasn't got us all blown to kingdom come by then.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 23/06/2025 09:54

None most years. Planning one next year.

Good to know you and your family have the carbon footprint of a small village though, it makes all the little sacrifices we make for the planet seem so worthwhile.

SwedishSayna · 23/06/2025 09:57

None, can't see it ever happening. Holiday in UK or Europe, more beautiful places than I could ever visit and flying is worsening the climate emergency so I personally couldn't.

MakingPlans2025 · 23/06/2025 09:57

None

MakingPlans2025 · 23/06/2025 09:59

Nice stealth boast though OP

LavenderBlue19 · 23/06/2025 10:00

Why do you ask? If you think you're doing too many and feel guilty, stop doing it. If it's a stealth brag, whatever. You obviously already know most people don't regularly do long haul trips because they cost too much money.

Personally I'm 43 and have never flown long haul. I hate flying and have never really been bothered enough for it to be worth being terrified for that long - Europe has so much beauty. We tend to do one trip a year somewhere sunny in Europe. If it were up to me alone I'd take the train as much as possible, but unfortunately DP likes flying.

Happymover · 23/06/2025 10:03

My one and only was to Canada. My memories of it are vague as it was in 1968 😀

ImFineItsAllFine · 23/06/2025 10:08

None since 2017, which was pre-kids. Now have 2 young DC with SEND and honestly can't imagine trying to deal with them both on a long haul flight right now. Maybe when they are older.

Agree with pp about not being arsed with long haul for a trip of any less than 2 weeks.

None.
Can't afford it like most people anno 2025.

jjeoreo · 23/06/2025 10:11

None. Haven't flown long haul for around 15 years. Can't see me doing it any time soon. I wouldn't say it's wholly for ethical reasons. I don't like flying, not massively interested in travelling a long way, have 3 kids and not pots of money.

TimSamandLulu · 23/06/2025 10:12

I’m 40. I’ve never done a long haul trip and don’t ever intend to, tbh.

MissAmbrosia · 23/06/2025 10:15

None for years, and have no plans to. I am not keen on flying and prefer to avoid now where possible for environmental reasons. We've done quite a few trips by train in recent years. It's much less stressful. I hate all the queuing and hanging about at airports. We flew last month, dh case went missing, interminable wait at check in. Will plan the train again for our next trips.

Jointhecircus · 23/06/2025 10:17

I haven’t been on a long haul flight in over 20 years. Can’t afford it.

Is the OT really bragging though? I flew loads of long haul as my parents migrated to NZ when I was young. If you take a NZ flight near Christmans, you will see many expat families with young babies, toddlers and small children doing the 24+ hour flight. I can image many South Asians grew up doing many long haul flights to India too.

Clearinguptheclutter · 23/06/2025 10:27

To add, although most people I know have kids which will skew the statistics a bit, I don’t know anyone that regularly goes long haul. I know a few that have maybe gone long haul once in the last five years but it was very much a much saved up for treat (eg Orlando)

environmental considerations aside, I think the vast majority of the UK just can’t afford to even contemplate going long haul regularly and the OP is living on a different planet

languedoc1 · 23/06/2025 10:32

1 every year and it's dire every time with 2 kids but my DH's family lives far away. For pleasure we've done long haul only once - on our honeymoon. But honestly tickets have become really expensive and I wouldn't go if we didn't have to.

Echobelly · 23/06/2025 10:33

None, I think our last one was in 2014.

I think there is a massive difference between flying a lot because you live thousands of miles from your family and choosing to fly long haul just because you can

I don't know many people who do not, so really depends on our frame of reference. I think most people in our (middle class, salary earners, nobody super wealthy) friendship circle do long-houl yearly or every other year at least.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 23/06/2025 11:01

None.

Parker231 · 23/06/2025 11:04

A lot - we live in Canada and my parents, sister and DD live in Brussels, DS in Amsterdam and DH’s sister in Colorado. We visit them regularly . We also like long haul holidays.
