Would you go to Turkey at the moment?

What are people’s thoughts on Turkey given what’s happening in the Middle East?

Im going in 2 weeks time. I already have a fear of flying and am a terrible over thinker with a very over active imagination so I’m not feeling too great at the moment. From everything I have read and watched online there is no reason to be worried about going to Turkey. Following this thread with interest and hoping for some knowledgeable people to reassure us!

Greendayz · 22/06/2025 23:24

I went there recently (Istanbul) and had a great time. Assuming it's a touristy type area you're going to and not the Syrian boarder then definitely yes I would go.

FarterBart · 22/06/2025 23:29

My daughter is due to go next week and I am feeling concerned. I don’t know what the right answer is. It’s worrying.

awkwardasfuck · 22/06/2025 23:56

Just got back. It's fine

If any sort of war gets to the point where it's actually dangerous to spend time in a Turkish coastal resort, there will be far bigger problems all over the Western world anyway.

HappierTimesAhead · 23/06/2025 09:32

I'm flying there this week and not worried at all. The Foreign office has long cautioned against going near the Syrian border but apart from this, they have not changed their advice (apart from travelling from Iran to Turkey which I imagine will not affect most mumsnetters).
I'm now getting more worried about the heat. I had hoped it would be 31/32° but it looks more like 37/38° which may ruin the holiday.

minipie · 23/06/2025 09:49

Have you seen the size of Turkey? The usual holiday destinations are a long way from the ME.

cossette · 23/06/2025 09:57

Most of the tourist resorts in Turkey are on the bottom west of the country. Turkey is 3.5 times the size of the UK. Imagine the UK turned on its side and 3.5 times larger and you will be that far away from Eastern Turkey and the Syrian border. It's a very large country and the touristy areas should definitely be safe.

HappierTimesAhead · 23/06/2025 10:32

Also, Turkey's position in global politics is complex and it's not about to get drawn into what is quite a regional conflict at the moment (I am not naive to it expanding in the future).
Turkey is a member of NATO but also retains relations with Russia. So, it has a unique position and nobody knows what path it may go down if a global conflict develops. But no one is about to start bombing Turkish holiday resorts.

It was high 30s when I was there in July last year. I don’t cope well with the heat and vowed I would never ever return in July yet here I am ready to go again in 2 weeks 😂 the joys of working term time.

gegs73 · 23/06/2025 14:36

I don’t think I’d choose to go if I were planning a holiday right now. However, if it had been booked I’d definitely be on my way.

So presumably you were still able to enjoy it enough that you booked again?!! Please make me feel better as I am worried that we will just spend the whole time in an air conditioned hotel room! Sorry for derailing the thread.

LoopyGremlin · 23/06/2025 16:57

Thanks for all the input. I realise I am probably being quite silly!

Absolutely loved it! Spent a lot of time under a parasol and in the pool. Last couple of days were spent mostly in the indoor pool. Went on one day trip that I coped with didn’t manage anymore but that was more due to not being able to afford to do much else! I was there for an all inclusive though and not exploring (kids not interested at their age) I think I would have struggled with that as I struggled walking to the shops 😂 I am terrible in the heat though even over here in the Summer is too hot for me and I am very pale and burn badly. Where about are you going?

Your worries are understandable but hopefully you're reassured. Türkiye is a lovely place full of lovely welcoming people and is safe as it currently stands

Please enjoy yourself! The food, the sun, the characters, the scenery, have a blast

CandiedPrincess · 23/06/2025 19:55

We're going in a few weeks. It's niggled me a bit today but unless the government say we can't travel, we'll be going or we'll lose all our money.

Ah this has reassured me as we are going with the full intention of spending days in the pool, napping (hopefully the kids too!) and eating without leaving the resort/doing any trips. We are going to Fethiye which looks beautiful. I've been to Bodrum many times.

If you're doing Fethiye and you haven't already, do a Dalyan river cruise

Wow, I have just googled this and the tombs carved into the cliff face look amazing!

honeylulu · 23/06/2025 20:28

I'm due to go to Istanbul for a few days end of next month and I'm just starting to get a bit twitchy. Not least because my son is out there doing an internship (the reason for our visit). According to him it's all ok so far. Apparently a lot of Iranians are heading across the border to east Turkiye because they see it as a safe country.

@HappierTimesAhead Have been to Fethiye before and it's absolutely beautiful - one of my favourite holidays! If you feel energetic take a trip to the Saklikent Gorge (hope I've spelt that right).

Like something out of game of thrones! They usually stop off at the mud baths and thermal springs too. Have fun!
