Looking for inspiration for a holiday in the last few weeks of August (next year) with DH and kids aged 5-15. Last year we went to Annecy and loved it. What we loved:
Water warm enough to swim in and set up for swimming for kids e.g. slides and boards to jump from. Lovely old town to potter around, fun in the mountains, biking from lake etc. It wasn't overwhelmingly busy when we went. Loved it!
Key things for us were:
- Water - warm enough (for us) to swim - think 24 deg + (we are not cold water swimmers!)
- BUT not too hot, out of the water, we are all fair and 30 deg max is prob what we can manage.
- Clean modern looking accommodation - tend to do self catering apartment so we can cook in the evening to save money.
- Relaxed vibe, places to eat out, and supermarket or similar nearby.
- Budget around 3-4k.
Looking for something similar and so far googled:
- Italian lakes - but everyone seems to say hot and busy in August.
- Interlaken - lovely but worried about £££ in Switzerland. We did a day from Annecy and was shocked at prices of food etc.
- Lake Konstance - looked lovely but not quite so picturesque as Annecy or inviting for swimming. But happy to be told otherwise.
- Lake Bled & Austrian lakes - struggling with accommodation. For some reason, I'm really impacted by my surroundings on holiday and all the accommodation I can find is quite dark and traditional looking e.g. wood chalets.
It actually doesn't have to be lakes - any warm river or sea is good. I think I just need help narrowing it down and hearing about places others have loved.
I'm now wondering whether to go somewhere like South of France around Avignon, but worried about heat. I'd loved to go to Croatia but again August seems to be too hot.
Would appreciate any suggestions.
