Hi, looking for your recommendations for a gorgeous break for partner’s 50th. We are hoping to fly from Manchester/Leeds-Bradford on Sunday mid morning and back Wednesday morning (strict timings between ex having the kids!) Would like to combine some city life, history/culture, and beach/pool, beautiful coastline, etc! Don’t want to go to Barcelona, and would prefer moderate heat as opposed to 40 degrees!
Any ideas gratefully received - including lovely accommodation recommendations. Don’t have a big budget, but an average one!

Lisbon. Fabulous city and beaches within easy reach.

La Rochelle - with a day trip to Ile de Re or Oleron. If the flights work.

Bilbao

Lake Garda (fly to Verona, easy train from there) or other lakes if you hire a car

Lisbon or Porto. Both fab.

Valencia has everything on your list! Gorgeous buildings, galleries, museums, beach, brilliant food, friendly city. Not sure of temp in July though but def cooler than Barcelona

Nice? My usual recommendation of the Hotel La Palma in Stresa Lake Maggiore :)

Valencia is lovely - but I don’t think you would find it cooler than Barcelona, temperature wise.

I would go with one of the suggested destinations in France, northern Spain or Porto - purely down to the fact that I personally would find the other destinations too hot at the end of July.

Bjorkdidit · 11/06/2025 13:02

Med or Central Europe definitely has the potential to be too hot in late July.

With a specific window, I'd put the info into skyscanner.net to see what reasonably priced flights are available as a starting point. You could also see what jet2 city break packages are available as well as looking at booking separately.

If temperature is potentially a dealbreaker then you probably need to avoid anywhere south of Paris. So maybe Nantes in Brittany?

If you're prepared to take a chance that it might be 36° then look at Palma, which has been called "Barcelona's little sister" and has lots of mooching possibilities and very nice boutique hotels, as well as being right on the sea.
