We will be travelling to Boston later on this year and I was hoping for some recommendations of places to visit ( in Boston and day trips to surrounding places) plus recommendations of restaurants. All tips gratefully received.

The duck tour is fun.
Just wandering around the park and the paths along the river is nice.
Trip to Salem. By boat or train.
You’ll find various other boat trips too.
Its a really lovely city.

  • walking history tour & the freedom trail
  • if you like desserts , Mike’s pastries is an institution (giant cannoli, giant cream horns etc 😋)
  • the Cheers bar and the law firm building from Ally McBeal 😍

Thank you! I was desperately trying to remember the name; never had a better cannoli and I’ve tried for nearly 20 years

We went last year, amazing city! The JFK library was brilliant and we all enjoyed it (three teenagers too), same for Fenway Park.

I am envious. - it is by far the nicest city I have been to. Enjoy!

I would recommend a wander around Beacon Hill, and also along Commonwealth Avenue/Newbury St. Also a trip out to the Museum of Fine Art and the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, which are very close to each other and a shortish ride on the green line (I think) of the subway.

We loved a day trip to Harvard, and did a really interesting walking tour in both Boston and around Harvard.

get Boston cream cakes from the original bakery

cape cod is Fab but To far for a day

we went to an amazing lobster shack by the water called the barking crab, had to queue but it moved quite quickly

OneAgileTraybake · 08/06/2025 20:26

Salem is incredible and a must visit, we went by boat. The freedom trail is also very good!

and the Boston tea party museum on the ship! So much fun

ReignOfError · 08/06/2025 20:29

Lowell National Historical Park. It’s an easy journey on the train.

tartyflette · 08/06/2025 20:32

Faneuil Hall indoor market and shops with cafés, restaurants on the outside surrounds. The waterside area is lovely too, as is a boat trip around the bay!
(Can never resist a boat trip, but i appreciate that may be just me)
We also had a trip to Salem, interesting and sort of historic. (Ancient history for there, not so much for Brits and Europeans. )

spicemaiden · 08/06/2025 20:33

Second Faneuil Hall - and have the clam chowder (if you like seafood)

spicemaiden · 08/06/2025 20:34

The Holocaust memorial is quite breathtaking too

Modern Pastries is better than Mike’s, and it doesn’t have an enormous line of tourists outside!
