Where to go for new year sun

ILikeFreesias · 06/06/2025 22:21

I’m looking for a holiday for myself, my husband and our 18 year old in late December/ early January. We need to be back for the start of the school term. Where can I go for sun at that time of year? Ideally with a lovely beach! Thanks

Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Bahrain all fab weather at that time of year. Alternatively Caribbean

We've done New Year sun holidays twice. I really enjoyed Thailand at that time of year but not Malaysia (a bit too hot during the day).

Lanzarote, is the warmest of the Canary Island. Average temperatures are around 21 degrees C during the day (cooler at night) at this time of year. Flight time 4hrs. We have visited a few of the Canary Islands during the winter months and have always been lucky with the weather but it obviously isn’t guaranteed.

Maldives, Average temperatures are around 29 degrees C during the day (and not much cooler at night) at this time of year. Flight time just over 10hrs.

Cape Verde, Average temperatures are around 26 degree C during the day, at this time of year. Flight time just over 7 hrs.

All have lovely beaches, depending on the resort.

We did Maldives for a week last year and this year are doing Egypt.

Mauritius

Antigua, we went in Feb but it would be lovely in Jan too. Really safe island with lots to do. We stayed at St James Club down near English harbour, was lovely.

What's the budget? As in, if the world's your oyster, the Maldives. Helps if you like scuba diving though...

alcoholnightmare · 07/06/2025 14:17

Winter sun for me has been Dubai, Maldives and Mauritius. Lots of money, but worth every penny

minipie · 07/06/2025 14:19

Maldives costs an absolute bomb at NY, it’s peak price time.

Lots of winter sun destinations are pricey at NY but Maldives takes the prize for ramping it up

Australia or Sth Africa

Cape Town.

Thanks for your suggestions, I was looking at spending no more than £10,000 which seems to rule out the Maldives! I’ve been looking at Cape Verde which seems to have some good options

Thailand is a good option although obviously high season but cost of food can be quite low. Dubai is sunny but barely warm enough for the beach at that time. We even had a few chilly days in Abu Dhabi in early Jan.

I’ve heard a lot of “mixed” views on Cape Verde hotels so do tread carefully and forensically examine tripadvisor!

minipie · 11/06/2025 13:06

Yes I have read lots of reports about food poisoning in Cape Verde. Parents went three times and brushed off the risk saying their hotel was an exception- until they got horrendous D&V on the third trip.

Twilightstarbright · 11/06/2025 15:27

@ILikeFreesias I paid £7k for a week all
Inc at a 4 star in the Maldives for 2a1c with Virgin. We flew overnight on NYE which reduced the cost.

MissFritton65 · 11/06/2025 16:14

@ILikeFreesias we went to Cape Verde about 15 years ago and it was one of our worst holidays. Nothing went wrong but it was dull and uninspiring. I think you can find much better places for your money!

Summerisere · 11/06/2025 17:49

Mexico
Caribbean
Indian Ocean
Middle East
Goa

I second Abu Dhabi. I booked direct flights with BA & cost around £1k per person for 5 nights in a beachfront hotel. Extremely safe & everyone was so friendly, Was a good balance of beach & culture (Louvre museum, grand mosque etc). Nice restaurants too.
