Holidays in Gran Canaria

Hi there,

Trying to decide on two different places in Gran Canaria, the Green Golf Bungalows in Maspalomas or the Lucana Hotel and Spa in Playa del Ingles.

Am travelling with dh and ds1 who is 5 and ds2 who is 20mths.

Advice on both hotels would be helpful and on the areas as neither of us has even been to Gran Canaria before. From what I can gather, Playa del Ingles is pretty built up while Maspalomas seems to be quieter.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know the hotels but Playa Del Ingles tends to be the "party town" in GC - big, sprawling, built up, lots of clubs, bars etc. Union Jack shorts a plenty. Great fun when you're young, free and single but not sure I'd go back there with family

Maspalomas has the most gorgeous sand dunes and a decent amount of bars, restaurants etc., without being tacky. Much nicer imho

That's what I thought but dh likes the hotel and although I have my reservations about the bungalows (they have stairs!), I thought Maspalmas looked quieter, but is it too quiet?

I don't think its too quiet - still loads to do and only a short bus/car ride from Playa if you did want to go. The dc's will love the dunes

Depends where the hotel is in Playa - if its central I would worry about loud music til 6am and lots of pissed up yobs.

Thanks, will pass this on to dh.

Worth bumping tomorrow - there are a couple of travel agents on mn who might know the hotels you're looking at and can help more

Is there nothing you fancy in Puerto Rico ? Its the second largest one - not as rowdy as Playa but a bit more going on than Maspalomas.. Might be a good compromise

If going in high season I would go for Maspalomas. it is quieter but yet lots to do. A taxi to Playa is only about Euro5. Buses are regular. However looking at the location of the bungalows it says you have to shuttle to the beach being 2.5km away ..I would prefer walking distance esp with buggy / 5 yr old and buckets spaded etc etc.
We stayed on the edge of Playa overlooking the dunes ( in low season) and said that if we went back we would go to Maspalomas as dd will be bigger and not transportable in a buggy. Loved the beach there. More 'free space ' !

Thanks for that Rosa. Sorry never got back to you before now, I tend to "post and run"!

Hiya I live in Gran Canaria and would recommend the bungalows.

Playa del Ingles is much louder and more youngster orientated especially at night.

As Rosa says Maspalomas is not far from playa del ingles if you want to go in and have a meal or shopping. However now in maspalomas it is really developed lately so loads of bars, restaurants and shops nearby.

Its really not expensive to get taxis from anywhere to the beach etc.

Looking at the hotel it is in a quieter part of playa but still not far from the busier clubby type areas.

I would think you would be happy in the bungalows especially being a family.

If DH prefers hotels have you checked out Hotel Dunas Mirador Maspalomas, or Hotel Dunas Suite Hotel Maspalomas

Or another lovely option that i think is fantastic for families is Costa Meloneras area recently built up with taxi and bus access its lovely and lots of bars, restaurants etc and 200m from beach. There are hotels and bunglaows there. These are good Hotel Bungalows Bahia Meloneras

Hope ive helped dont hesitate to ask anything else!

Sorry - cheekily jumping in on this thread!
Parofleurmapu - first time taken DS abroad - is it easy enough in GC to buy nappies and formula? I feel really stupid asking this? we are going to Puerto Mogan

YouNeverKnow · 29/05/2008 22:25

my dad lived in puerto mogan and its beautiful, we are hopefully going back. my nans apt was just above the beach beside the river type bit and my dads was a white building just before beach

YouNeverKnow · 29/05/2008 22:26

ladders there is plenty for you to sort what you need

ladders · 30/05/2008 23:22

What is the situation with shops being open on a Sunday? - we arrive early hours of the morning - thanks

ladders · 30/05/2008 23:23

Sorry should have said we are self catering so really interested in supermarket in puerto Mogan.............

YouNeverKnowIMightFlounce · 31/05/2008 23:02

not sure where you are staying but there is a spar and also hippodino if i remember rightly which is a supermarket. i think they would be open. spar have good opening times though. alot of the smaller shops close (or they used to!) for church and a siesta. you shouldnt have any probs with getting what you need. where are you staying? the beach is great. fridays there is a big market around the harbour, mogan gets very busy then but other than that its a fantastic place.

my dad now lives in mainland spain but i would book a holiday back to mogan tomorrow.
