Hi all

Considering going to Austria in the summer and loving the look of some of these kinderhotels which seem to include local public transport while you're there. I would love to know whether it's recommended to have a car or whether it's doable by public transport?

Many thanks in advance!

We’re staying in Saalbach in the summer and not hiring a car. From what I’ve read the public transport in the area is good (and free) and it’ll be nice to not have to drive.

(I read that as Sandbach, which is a pleasant enough town but not somewhere I'd think of for a holiday)

There is plenty to do in Saalbach and Hinterglemm that does not involve needing to use a car and taxis are easy to find.

Public transport (trains and buses) are free for tourists throughout Salzburgerland, so if you are flying into Salzburg Airport you can take the Postbus 260 or the train to Zell am See, and then the Postbus 680 up the valley - all free of charge. You need to ensure that the hotel or accommodation provider emails you the link to your Mobility Ticket - and this ticket is valid from your arrival day until your departure day, both days inclusive; so you can use it to get to and from Saalbach.

There is one bus every hour to Zell am See, but if you want to do day trips to other places then a car would be more convenient and give you some more options. However, there is enough to see and do in Saalbach for a week - particularly as guests also receive a free Joker Card that gives free access to the cable cars, to the outdoor pool and to many other attractions - and a Kinderhotel has even more activities for children than a normal hotel.
