Help me plan a trip to Sri Lanka for DH and me

We plan to go next summer and will have up to 3 weeks towards end July/August. How many days is best?
What will the weather be like then please?
What must we see and what's not worth it?
Also, I'd like to flop at a nice hotel on the coast for the last 3-4 days if you could recommend anywhere please!
Not a luxury budget but a good solid modest budget, iykwim.
As we will be travelling without DCs, we are very free and easy.
Recommendations gratefully received.

Hotel = recommend the Kandalama by Geoffrey Bawa. Just beautiful if you’re ok with monkeys watching you shower 🥳

If you want a truly beautifully designed luxurious hotel there’s no other architect in the country that does it better

Loved a tea tour and in the highlands, travelled by train and sat with feet dangling out of the doors. It was 3rd class and met and spoke with some lovely students.
