IC trains in Austria

Does anyone know when/if IC trains in Austria are reservable?

We’ve got interrail passes for August, so I’m trying to just get seat reservations but the OBB website is saying not possible at the moment.

Don't know myself but seat61.com is the go-to source for rail info. A fantastic resource.

Caspianberg · 03/06/2025 18:57

Yes usually. They are €3.50 and come after selection of ticket under ‘extras’

Do you know when the reservations are released @Caspianberg ?

Unfortunately this one is too detailed for Seat61.

@MinnieMountain - I just looked at our local route for 10th August on train line and you could book a reservation.
Have you looked on train line and not just obb?

MinnieMountain · 03/06/2025 19:48

That’s interesting @Caspianberg . We want to go from Schladming to Ulm on 6 August. Both ÖBB and DB allow you to buy tickets but not do reservation only.

You can’t do just reservations on Trainline can you?

@MinnieMountain

Its on oebb also. You just tick ‘ I have a ticket already’ then pay for just the seat. It seems to be an option already on your route, just select the times you want

@MinnieMountain I could also reserve a ticket on this route, even on the less complicated IC + ICE route using the method above.

When the photo eventually gets approved, this is what I get for the 08:10 train that we want

Hang on, are you sure you need to make Interrail reservations for Austrian trains? We are Interrailing this summer, and neither our trains from Berlin- Vienna or Budapest- Vienna need reservations. Best way to check is the "Reservations" section of the Interrail website itself- just enter your journey and see what it tells you

crackofdoom · 04/06/2025 14:54

Oh, I have just double checked your destination...you're going from Austria to Germany? Ulm is supposed to be lovely, isn't it! This makes me even more certain you won't need reservations, as we're doing the same (different destinations) and don't- obviously double check, but I'd be surprised. There is a section in seat61.com about which countries/ international routes require reservations and which don't.

(I've just managed to book Vienna- Brasov and Bucharest- Budapest sleeper trains, so I'm feeling a warm glow of achievement. I did it via the Interrail site- I tried with OBB and got no joy. It's a complex process and I tried twice, got as far as the payment page before being told my transaction wasn't possible with no idea why! After that I was happy to pay the small charge Interrail levies!)

@crackofdoom - you don’t need to make reservations. It’s only if you want a guaranteed seat. On busy routes and busy times ie summer it could be tricky to get for example 4 seats together

I think that 8am one is just a no reservation train. Ie you have to just all
board and take whatever seats available. The one at 10am has reservations

Ah see, I'm quite relaxed about that kind of thing. As long as reservations aren't compulsory I don't care about a bit of seat hopping.

Datsafunnyone · 04/06/2025 15:03

That 8am train is a EuroCity , that might be the reason. Alternatively they can't offer reservations just yet due to engineering works or schedule changes. At least that's what it says under "more info". If you definitely want a seat then you'll have to choose another route.

Caspianberg · 04/06/2025 15:44

And yes that’s a EC train not IC/ ICE.
