Crete beaches question

We are looking at going to Crete this August. I found lovely places to stay in Almyrida and Kalyves but I read the beaches are really shallow as it’s a bay. Anyone familiar with these beaches. How far do you need to wade out before it gets deeper? Open to suggestions for alternative places to stay too. We are new to Crete. We are wanting to stay in in a small village or town within walking distance to a beach, shops and tavernas. Thanks

I don’t know but you might get good advice from the Tripadvisor Crete forum? They are good with specific questions like this.

Panormos might fit your needs

I'd second Panormos. Two beaches and it's a lovely little town with good choice of tavernas and the usual shops.

Almyrida has a gently shelving beach. It's perfectly safe for young kids and you have quite a wade before it gets deeper. Plus it's sandy which a lot of beaches in Crete aren't.
