Tell me about Seville

soupyspoon · 30/05/2025 20:28

Always been attracted to Seville, Grenada, Cordoba, Jerez, Cadiz

From what I can see Seville seems to be the easiest to get to from an airport and I'd rather go from Gatwick if possible

London City would have been ideal (moreso than Gatwick) but they dont go to Seville. They go to Malaga but not direct in winter but then we would have to get from Malaga to one of those cities above

Has anyone done this?

Did Seville and Cadiz last year. Seville was super hot ( we went in August) but beautiful. Cadiz is also amazing. Very busy as the cruise ships dock there, but a lovely town. We hired a car and drove from Seville to Cadiz (and I think we got the train back to Seville but I can’t really remember!).

soupyspoon · 30/05/2025 20:33

We wont be hiring a car.

We flew to Seville. Getting the bus to the city from the airport was really easy and quick, as was the return journey. We went in October and it was fantastic weather. Beautiful city and we would absolutely go again. Our only disappointment was that we didn't book the palace in advance and so we couldn't get tickets.

There's good train and/or coach services between those cities, look on rome2rio.com for options.

We've been to Seville, Granada and Cordoba by train or coach from Malaga. You just need to get the train from the airport to the city to get the main station. The coach station is right next to the train station.

Be aware that, as Granada is at altitude, it can be quite cold in winter. But you can see the snow covered Sierra Nevada mountain range from parts of the city, which is spectacular.

But I wouldn't try and visit more than a couple of cities at a time, loads of interest so its good to have time to explore properly.

Wallywobbles · 31/05/2025 05:54

Seville is incredibly hot. Absolutely fabulous though.

tinytemper66 · 31/05/2025 06:20

Do not go during Holy Week. We took my mother who is 80. She thought it an adventure! It was packed and had religious processions twice a day. Every day a different part of the centre was cornered off. We had a blast but it did mean being stuck on a corner of a road for 1.5 hrs. I had no idea. I thought their events were at Easter like in other cities I had been to.
my fault for not checking. It meant we didn’t see many of the sites as they were sold out. I will definitely go back at a different time of year.

We went to Seville at New Year pre Covid. Have travelled a lot and it’s one of my favourite places. Was lovely and warm. Food great. Plenty to do. Stayed near the cathedral in an apartment with a roof terrace. Such happy memories.

HelenHywater · 31/05/2025 07:19

Are you looking for tips on going to all of those places in one holiday or just Seville? I've been to all of them apart from Cordoba, and it's relatively easy to get around by train. Flying into Seville is easy though too and I've been a few times. Agree it's very hot in summer, but we found an airbnb with a pool which helped!

No, I would only go one place at a time, Im not like the usual posters on here who seem to spend only a day in one place and move on

Im booking a week somewhere but I also want the convenience of airports

Looking at the travel to Grenada, its around 2 hours from the airport at Malaga and thats a nuisance and a faff.

We do plan to go to Andalusia at Holy Week one year, not this year obviously, or even next. We're used to Madrid in Holy Week although I know its more fervent down south

I fancy all of them but not in one holiday no, they've always been on my list but Im wondering what each of them are like before making the booking. Ive got a lot of properties saved in my airbnb to pick from today. The flights seem reasonable although the times are rubbish (for Seville anyway)

We went in September and just loved it. It was very hot.

We stayed in the Palacio de Villapanés hotel and it was perfect.

TheFlis · 31/05/2025 08:54

We have never got through an airport as quick as we did in Seville. Just 11 minutes after the wheels touched down we were in a taxi to our hotel, it was brilliant!

throwawaynametoday · 31/05/2025 08:54

Loved Seville. Went in February and weather perfect for a city break. I can't imagine how hot it must be in the summer.

If you want to visit the Alcazar (I'd recommend it, it's astonishing) make sure you book tickets in advance, it sells out. A few days in advance should be sufficient. You may want to prebook for the cathedral too.

It's a beautiful city and eating out is extremely good value compared to many European cities.

House4DS · 31/05/2025 08:58

We went in Feb - perfect temperature low to mid 20s - filled 2 days with sightseeing and could have easily done a third. It's so beautiful just wandering around.
We then took the train to Cadiz for 2 days - you could easily do that as a day trip though. Really liked Cadiz but there's less to do (but it does have the coast).
Flight times from Stansted were good if you can travel out that way.

Vitrolinsanity · 31/05/2025 09:00

I went at Easter and it was perfect weather. It’s quite flat so we hired bikes. The smell of orange was amazing. It is up there with Biarritz in my random “let’s just go there and see” places.

Flomingho · 31/05/2025 09:09

Seville is a beautiful city. Not as busy as Barcelona, which I found a bit overwhelming. Only had a day there as took in a coach trip from Portugal but would love to go back and spend more time there. Eating and drinking was reasonable too.

You could look at an indirect flight to Granada (careful with the spelling unless you want to unintentionally end up on a much longer flight to the Caribbean) via Madrid or Barcelona. The airport is a way out of the city, but it's likely there will be a bus to the centre.

All the cities are worth visiting, with historical sites, parks, cafe culture so are great to wander around. I don't think I could pick a favourite, although there's probably the least to see in Cordoba, which is easily covered in a day trip by train from Seville or Malaga

soupyspoon · 31/05/2025 09:53

I know I keep spelling it wrong!

No I dont want indirect flights, I saw those come up but I cant be doing with the faff. One day we'll go there but either go through Malaga or Seville or perhaps a different time of year when the flights are direct perhaps.

We'll definitely spend a week in each place over the years, I would never go to a city on a day trip.

I went to Seville in April. Flew from Gatwick. All went smoothly on flights to and fro. I thought Seville was beautiful: we loved the Setas at night, Casa Pilotus, the Cathedral, the Royal Alcazar. I agree with the comment about the smell of the blossoms on the orange trees - we could smell it all weekend. The tapas was reasonable and so tasty. Get the burrata cheese! We walked it all and didn't need any transport (we were cheese-fuelled). Its all so picturesque with so many gorgeous squares. Best short break I've had.

I haven't got experience of the other places but we're thinking of Granada next year for the Alhambra. Couldn't resit coming on threat to wax lyrical about Seville though. 😆

wwyd2021medicine · 31/05/2025 10:13

I went in November - temp about 20 degrees which was lovely.
I enjoyed it so much I took DD there in Feb.
Relaxed, not over priced, lovely food, lots of places to walk to and to visit. Flamenco was amazing - I had not expected to enjoy it so much.

Shangrilalala · 31/05/2025 10:14

We flew into Madrid (available from our local airport) and then got the fast train down to Seville. Great journey and speedy. Fabulous holiday.

Hoppinggreen · 31/05/2025 10:19

We go to Seville about once a year but avoid July/August.
This year we are actually staying in Cadiz for a change and probably won't actually go to Seville but may go to Jerez and a glass of Sherry in Jerez is on my bucket list.
We will have a car but I think the trains down there are pretty good

chocolate08 · 31/05/2025 10:30

I lived in Seville pre children. It's an amazing city - lots to see for tourists and really easy to walk around. Food of course is fabulous. Locals see Nov as the winter and will be in coats even if you're not! I flew into Málaga a fair few times if direct flights weren't available - both buses and trains into Seville very easy. Seville to Cadiz and Cordoba both easy to do as side trips from Seville. I preferred Cadiz and it has a fab atmosphere being by the coast. Granada is much further over and more of a journey. I'd probably suggest a separate trip if you're only going for a short time. I know probably not a priority but the countryside and mountains around the area are gorgeous too.
