Tell me about Seville

soupyspoon · 30/05/2025 20:28

Always been attracted to Seville, Grenada, Cordoba, Jerez, Cadiz

From what I can see Seville seems to be the easiest to get to from an airport and I'd rather go from Gatwick if possible

London City would have been ideal (moreso than Gatwick) but they dont go to Seville. They go to Malaga but not direct in winter but then we would have to get from Malaga to one of those cities above

Has anyone done this?

Flew into Jerez and got the train to Seville (as the station is across the airport car park and it was far cheaper at the time). Was easiest for us. Scorching in June. The Alcantara was stunning. Really want to go back @soupyspoon

Trains are excellent but if you take this option, you should pre-book on-line on the Spanish trains web-site - very easy.

Ohnobackagain · 31/05/2025 10:54

@soupyspoon I mean the Alcazar (where Game of Thrones was filmed - the High Gardens bit) not Alcantara or whatever cr@p I put. I can no longer edit my earlier comment 🤣

I think you said you will be away for a week. Now IMO that is far too long for a single city, although I do understand that you are not keen on moving around either!

What puts you off going to other places rather than staying in the same place all week? It's your break, so obviously you do what's best for you.

If it's any use to you, my sister and I have a "bonding week" once a year. We are both late 60s and like to stick to one spot too, but occasionally want a bit of an adventure and to make the most of an area!

So flew into Seville, and home from Malaga over a week. Seville 3 days, Cordoba 2, Granada 2 and then flew home from Malaga. Had been to Malaga many times so it was just a gateway home!

It was such fun. We went in February, we're not bothered about weather and take it as it comes, but it was pleasant and the cool air helped with getting around without wilting from the heat! We took trains all the way and they were so inexpensive, clean and on time. But each to their own and if it's one place you want, then it's Seville if your flights go there in Winter, which is when I think you'll go.

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/05/2025 14:44

We went to Seville in late February and it was perfect - high teens/low 20s, jeans. It was till cool enough at night to need a light jacket and tights. I think April will be best if you want it a bit warmer in ths evening. It is a beautiful city, lots to see and amazing bars and food. We loved the more informal places wherr you ordered tapas at the bar and the staff challked up what you had eater on the bar top in front of you.

If I recall there is a decent metro system so you can get from the airport easily. We flew direct from Gatwick with BA and it was very easy.

toasty1 · 31/05/2025 16:46

Literally got back from Seville last night really straightforward flight from Gatwick, taxi's from the airport to the centre was a fixed price (would have done the bus but had my 12 yr old with me and we wanted to check in quick and get out sightseeing). As others have said walked pretty much everywhere other than a odd taxi back to accommodation late in the day which was cheap as chips 4/5 euros. So much to see and do wish we had longer

Am in the process of planning a week in Seville with visits to Cordoba and Granada. Two things a pain - only direct flight in the north west is with Ryanair and the horrendous Renfe train planning for Granada; think we will end up doing a day tour instead. So glad everyone enjoyed Seville and hope op does too; we are staying very near the Cathedral so does anyone have any reasonably priced places to eat in the evening and any good tour companies?

soupyspoon · 31/05/2025 17:08

Yes we'll book tonight for Seville this year and then will think about the other places for other times. I only want direct flights and will only use London City or Gatwick so will have to pick my times of year carefully or consider the journeys to the cities I need at the time

There is a free tour company. I will try and find the details

tinytemper66 · 31/05/2025 19:38

Free walking tour Sevilla

Did Seville and Cadiz last year. Seville was super hot ( we went in August) but beautiful. Cadiz is also amazing. Very busy as the cruise ships dock there, but a lovely town. We hired a car and drove from Seville to Cadiz (and I think we got the train back to Seville but I can’t really remember!).

We went with easyJet from Gatwick to Seville as a package holiday. No issues at all.

BustingBaoBun · 31/05/2025 19:44

I know all the places you've named very well. What time of year are you going?

Seville is so so so hot June - September, just saying.

Cordoba is fabulous. Granada, my DD spent years there studying, it's something else.

Just think about the heat if you are thinking about Seville in the months I mention. I am used to heat but this was something else.

We did two tours with Guru Walk they are free and you pay what you think it's worth at the end normally between 5-10 euros per person, the historic seville tour was fabulous with a cracking guide the Jewish Quarter & Santa Cruz one wasn't great due to a rather dull tour guide so we made our excuses and dipped out fairly quickly. We were recommended a flamenco show by a friend which was worth every penny, booked via Trip Advisor Puro Flamenco-Museo del Baile. Food wise Churros and Chocolate from Bar el Comercio again recommended to us. Good value tapas from La Escalona and Pelayo Bar.

We do plan to go to Andalusia at Holy Week one year, not this year obviously, or even next. We're used to Madrid in Holy Week although I know its more fervent down south

We (unknowingly) ended up in Seville in Holly week - and it was great.

For starters - spring is the best time to go - warm, but not too hot.
And the processions were beautiful - and not that hard to plan/navigate around.
We also did lots of day trips to various other attractions.
🤗🤗🤗

soupyspoon · 31/05/2025 20:00

Yes Holy week is one of our favourite times in Madrid, we go there a lot anyway, not religious but I love all the pomp and ritual. The processions are great.

So sorry everyone who replied I meant a day trip from Seville to Granada!

YogaThenChocolate · 31/05/2025 21:12

We’re going to Seville for a week in October, would love to hear any recommendations!

mummyh2016 · 31/05/2025 22:34

I loved Seville however you may struggle to spend a week there. We only went for 2 days and seen everything. It’s not a huge place.

Holy week is a Very Big deal in Seville. Massive

UncharteredWaters · 31/05/2025 22:39

We did Seville via Portugal last year.

flew to faro, few nights in the Algarve. Coach to Seville think it was 2.5ish hours and then flew home from Seville.

We wont be hiring a car.

Good
Seville is lovely but my one piece of advice would be do not take a car anywhere near it. Impossible to park, hugely stressful

Granada is the best of all the Andalusian cities IMO but without an airport
with UK flights, is awkward

We wont struggle at all, I really dont understand this mindset.

We always go to cities for holidays, we're not beach people, been to countless Spanish and Italian cities, always spend a week in each place

We do our shopping at the local market, walk round of a night time mooching the dark allyways, coming across different bars and churches, looking at different districts, going to different museums. We can spend nearly a day on coffee, cake, lunch, aperol spritz, a rest and then dinner. We lounge around, do lots of shopping, look at lots of architecture, enjoy different views, go on long walks, hire bikes, get the bus/train to a neighbouring local town or attraction.

No way would I restrict myself to a whistle stop tour.

You’ll love Seville OP (sounds like that’s what you decided?)

It’s not the biggest city, but there’s enough to keep you busy for a week, plus IF you get bored there’s some good day trip options.

The Alhambra in Granada is nothing short of amazing, but I’d have struggled to spend a whole week in Granada tbh. I found Cordoba endlessly fascinating and would have happily spent a full week there, but that’s partially because I love history and Cordoba has so much to offer in that respect. It has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other city in the world!

Same here. Sounds like a perfect city break.

SwedishEdith · 31/05/2025 23:55

Seville is beautiful. We hadn't booked tickets to the Alcazar but you can queue up at 9:00 and they release some then. We got lucky. Went in October as part of a trip to Granada as well - loved as well. A bit grittier but love that you get something to eat every time you order food, by law 😁 We used buses between cities. Taxi cheap and not long from Seville to the airport.

Roystonv · 01/06/2025 06:47

You are a bit scathing regarding day trips, sometimes it is the only way to see a place and I would rather see something wonderful briefly than not at all. Your method is to be admired but not possible for many.
