Hello everyone.

Looking for some advice as the passport office / Jet 2 have been no help so far.

I'm asking if you think my passport valid?

I saw a tiktok last week regarding the passport issue date problems people have been having and it got me worried about my own. I commented on the tiktok and most of the replies were saying I need to renew asap as it wasn't valid, but when I've been on the passport checkers online, it says it is? So I'm baffled and hoping you lovely lot can shed some light.

So, I go on holiday to Turkey on the 16th July.

My passport was issued on the 4th September 2015
My passport isn't due to expire until the 24th June 2026.

It'll have 11 months left on it at the time of travel. Turkey's entry requirements are that you need at least 150 days of validity. I emailed the Turkish consulate to ask their stance on it, they just confirmed the 150 day rule. To me, that says my passport would be valid. But the comments on the tiktok I saw, all say that due the issue date of my passport it wouldn't be valid?

Any help would be much appreciated 🙂

It’s fine. Ignore silly people on TikTok. You have more than enough days left.

(Even if you were going to the EU it would be ok as it’s less than 10 years old. )

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 27/05/2025 08:50

The 10 year rule only applies in EU countries. So Turkey won't have a problem with validity extending beyond 10 years from the date your passport was issued.

travelallthetime · 27/05/2025 08:50

Passport is valid. Just and FYI, it is also valid to travel to Europe on up to the 15th September

dementedpixie · 27/05/2025 08:52

They might be thinking of travel in the EU although your passport would be valid for that too. Turkey doesn't have the 10 year validity rule and has a 150 day rule for time remaining rather than 3 months.

Turkey isn’t in the EU or Schengen Zone.

For anyone reading who is concerned about travel to EU, try this passport checker www.tui.co.uk/passport-checker/

You’ve spoken to the Turkish consulate but are still giving TikTok credence?

They literally just replied "150 days validity" - nothing else, didn't comment on my questions regarding the issue date of my passport and if it was part of their entry requirements to check. That's the only reason I was second guessing myself. It was a Tiktok from Martin Lewis, wasn't just some random I promise 😆

The issue date only matters for travel in the EU when they specify that when you enter the EU your passport is under 10 years old (look at issue date and add 10 years; for you that would be 4th September 2025). When you leave the EU you need 3 months remaining; for you that would be 3 months prior to 24 June 2026.

As you're not travelling in the EU the above doesn't matter so you just need the 150 days remaining that Turkey specifies

AttilaTheMeerkat · 27/05/2025 09:19

There are plenty of deep fake videos on TikTok purporting to be from Martin Lewis.

It wouldn't be a deep fake video. It will be a video talking about passport requirements for travel in the EU. Plenty of threads pop-up every year about passports that look valid but aren't

But I’m guessing it wasn’t Martin Lewis replying :)

No, wasn't Martin Lewis replying, the video was on his official page, I just happened to comment on it!

Thanks everyone for your help. xx

They were the first place I tried, they said they can't office advice, told me to check with my tour operator, tried Jet2, they said speak to your passport office 😅Thankfully it looks like I'll ok to travel so panic over! x
