American Express Avios companion voucher

Hi
I have a companion voucher which ran out last week which I didn’t use . On the American Express site it says I have until 20 November to spend £4k and get the next voucher
We’ve been updating the house and putting as much as possible on the card and I need to pay JL 5k for furniture etc which is coming this month.

does anyone know what the validity date of this new voucher is? Would it be from June to June?

I really want a voucher that covers the summer months for a long haul trip next July/August so would I be better putting the John Lewis bill on another card?

Or would it work if I did an instalment plan for the next American expresscard bill? So paying £1.7k for the next three months. I always pay in full so I don’t know if that changes things

appreciate this is niche and boring question to ask on bank holiday Monday though.

Thanks for any answers

Check the terms of your card, but I think the BA companion vouchers last 2 years; and you only have to take the outbound flight during that period ie if your voucher is valid 1/6/25 - 31/5/27; you can book a return trip leaving 30/5/27 and returning 2 or 3 weeks later.

Actually getting a flight for the dates and destination that you want is a different matter! I’ve never encountered a “customer loyalty “ scheme that makes it so difficult to actually benefit from (except maybe Waitrose 😾)

Thanks. Yes I think for Amex it depends what credit card you use but it says mine are only valid for a year

Date the voucher is issued at is the day you hit your spend goal do worth delaying payment if you need it for summer 2026.

Ours are two years but check Amex card and upgrade if you are on a 1 year voucher. Some routes are always going to be difficult. You have to be flexible in date and destination. We’ve always got what we have wanted but we always do long haul. Currently on holiday using them in USA.

It sounds like you have the free Amex card if your CV is valid just for one year? In which case, yes delay as said above. You may struggle to get long haul next summer as school holidays always very difficult to get on popular routes. So remember to be on the phone or online -355 days out. Although if it’s a 1 year CV, then presumably you’ll be going economy so there will be more seats available compared to Club. Which destination are you thinking of? I use Amex religiously to collect Avios and Ive had amazing holidays to places I would never be able to afford in business (I’m too old and stiff to sit upright for 12-15 hour flights! ).

Yes it’s just the free Amex card. Thanks for all the advice. I will try and slow down spending on it so I get the voucher to become live late August which gives me a chance to use it next summer. - although sadly I hadn’t realised it was economy only so I may have to investigate the other Amex cards.

thanks

We’ve just gone Club. Always go club on the companion vouchers.
