I did 3 lovely days away in Hereford, I love reading so we visited the chained library and had some time in Hay on Wye looking in all the bookshops. Really pretty (even in the drizzle!)

Do not go to Matlock Bath in the Peak District unless you are attracted to small places that have morphed into the most down market, grotty version of the seaside. It is full of stinky fish and chip shops, arcades etc. No proper shops and grim pubs. You could spend 20 minutes looking at all the motorbikes and that’s it.
However, the Peak District is lovely-based around Castletown or Bakewell, very outdoorsy but close enough to Sheffield for shopping etc.

Portsmouth/Southsea are nice for a break

We would always stay in Southsea and drive into Portsmouth when we fancied it

Oh thanks for all these recommendations (good and bad lol).

I absolutely love those little quaint shops and cafes. I have also been to Worcester and really liked walking around there although Bournemouth and the wee town of Burley was lovely. Loved it.

Salcombe, Padstow, anywhere in the Cotswolds.

Oxford is nice and plenty to see and do - there is a Malmaison Hotel which is a converted prison which is fun!

Bath is good and the thermal Spa is a nice experience.
