Can anyone recommend a bag that good for a 6 day trip. Would prefer a trolly one but would consider a rucksack type too

I bought a Cabin Max rucksack 15 years ago and it’s been everywhere.
The secret is LARGE OUTSIDE POCKETS. Honestly these are the game changers. Pockets on pockets. Means you can pack toiletries in one, tech in another, documents in a third, without rummaging through your stuff.

I bought a Cabin Max Vela bag and sold it on after one use. Pockets on the inside meant looking through dirty clothes to find stuff.

DS does “army rolling” Tight sausages of clothes ( plus they come out uncreased). Even with size 12 shoes he can pack two weeks in a small man bag.

I was on an Easyjet domestic flight a couple of months back. Purchased the small cabin bag allowance (45 x 36 x 20 cm) plus one large cabin bag (56 x 45 x 25 cm). I was sweating buckets as my suitcase and backpack were RIGHT on those measurements if not slightly over and I am nothing if not a risk-averse, rule-driven pedant.

I needn't have worried. There were people boarding the flight with luggage much larger than mine and no airport staff so much as looked twice at them. My inner pedant bristled at this, though the friend who was with me insisted they don't check for domestic flights. Don't know if it's different for international travel.

I'm flying again with them this week taking the same luggage so fingers crossed it will all be smooth sailing this time too.

That’s no true it does seem to depend on the airport we fly quite often with easyjet Bristol to Inverness, Bristol we rarely get our bags checked but Inverness we often have to prove by placing in the check frame. I know lots on here advocate for bags with lots of pockets but I prefer a fixed bag that once done up you know will definitely be within the limit.

I went for 2 trips this year, both on easyJet, first was 6 days, 2nd was 8 days, and I refused to pay for a bag. Both times I used this IKEA backpack, with a set of 3 mesh packing cubes, and it worked perfectly.

The packing cubes are a game changer - I used the smallest one for underwear, the middle one for tops and the largest for trousers. Keeps everything compressed and organised. Then, I just had my toiletries bag and a plastic wallet with documents. There was even space for a few souvenirs on the way home!!

I used to travel for work, so I am a bit of an expert at packing lightly...

That bag is too big for an easyJet under-seat bag. 80% of the time they won’t check but the other 20% of the time they will. They are increasingly checking as that is how they make their money.

It was Gatwick I flew out of last time and will be this time again. Can't vouchsafe for other airports so good to know the level of scrutiny may be airport dependent.

It's a Nordace Sienna I have as a backpack and measurements just under. Never flow into Invervess although I've been there by train a lot for work. Smile

If they check dimensions at the gate (IIRC Ryanair do) be careful! I’ve seen someone have his bag refused since it didn’t fit, unless he paid for it to go as hold luggage. Plus of course holding everybody else up. It’s not as if their specifications weren’t crystal clear.

In the past I’ve managed by wearing a couple of thicker top layers, and putting them in the overhead locker once on board.

I have read that the ground staff are incentivised to charge for bags.
If you google it there are strong denials from Ryan Air but other airlines do admit to doing it so not completely convinced by Ryan Airs protests.

I have seen videos of ppl whose bags clearly do fit being denied unless they pay. So not worth the stress for me!

BobGalaxy · 25/05/2025 17:26

I’ve taken this underseat wheely case on two EasyJet trips. It’s been checked for size each time but it fits perfectly into to the gauge thing. I can fit 4 days of day/evening wear in, with a bit of re-wearing.

StaringAtTheWater · 25/05/2025 17:46

*I've got the Cabin Max Metz bag. Exactly the right size and super roomy.

*

I have this one too and it is decent, but just a warning it that it goes way wider than 20cm fully packed! I pack in such a way that I can grab a couple of bulky things out last minute, so it then becomes slim enough (e.g. jumper tied round waist, mac with all my toiletries stuffed in the pockets)

That's a good tip. It has compression straps, though - is it wider even when these are pulled tight?

StaringAtTheWater · 25/05/2025 18:01

It depends what you have in there - there's only so much you can compress if you get my drift! I've done a ski weekend with my ski boots in the small carry on and there wasn't much room for much else, so I wore my salopettes on the plane! They used to be quiet lenient but the last three times I've flown from Gatwick with Easyjet they have made me put my bag in the tester (so assume they get commission now!)

That makes sense. I'm debating whether I really need to take my straighteners . . .

Hall84 · 25/05/2025 23:01

Working through the thread but with compression packing cubes I got 2xbackpacks as easyjet carry on for 5 days for me & DD. Problematic if you want more than 1 pair of shoes though

Booboobagins · 26/05/2025 08:19

I bought this backpack from Amazon amzn.eu/d/7DNiWO3 and compression cubes amzn.eu/d/6EPlAoF.

I went on a week-long trip with just the backpack (I had washing facilities). I wore a pair of trousers, long sleeved top, hoody and coat on the flight.

In terms of clothes in the packing cubes - I took 2 pairs of trousers, a skirt, a dress, 5 tops and a thin cardigan plus underwear and a pair of socks. A capsule wardrobe helps so you can mix and match.

I find it's cosmetics/toiletries that are the killer tbh so I bought a clarins make up palate, micro make up brushes from Temu and tinted suncream. I fit all my cosmetics into a bag that dock and bay towels come in so it wouldnt be a disaster if sonething leaked. i also took a mini hair straightner cos my hair is curly and can be untameable amzn.eu/d/58RgMGF

Ref shoes, I wore my bulky day shoes on the flight and had a pair of nice flat sandals in my bag. My handbag was a small messenger bag - big enough for my keys, phone, passport, purse/card holder and a reusable micro shopping bag.

It all fit no probs.

My daughter is the queen of packing, last summer she was away for 6 weeks with only an EasyJet under seat bag (although we had a washing machine). She uses a sports bag and packing cubes.

I like using Aerolite or Cabinmax who allow you to select bags by airline and whether they are free/under seat or larger paid for carry ones.

This year DD is panicking as she is flying BA with a hold suitcase, a large carry on and a personal bag. Too much luggage is making her anxious!

Loving the mini hair straightener and very tempted.

The pocket system at the front of the Metz is great:

Goingawayistricky · 27/05/2025 10:28

Sorry ! Mine was FlyGear not Cabin Max and as I said it years old so no link - no help at all 😔 . It is this one if can find it.

Goingawayistricky · 27/05/2025 11:01

The Cabin Max one looks good but as Easy Jet have a bigger allowance you might as well use it.
This is one that's closest

Goingawayistricky · 27/05/2025 11:19

Ok ignore me! There is a larger Cabin Nax one and it’s got 2lt more capacity than the one I posted.

Getting my coat.

For those who are interested, I now have in my possession both the Cabin Max Manhattan and the Metz (for Ryanair, but they both come in the Easyjet size) and have done a 'practice pack' with each to decide which one to keep.

Both seem decent qual and are surprisingly roomy, but the Metz has won. This is because a) the front pockets are much better - more of them, more accessible, and lots of organisation potential, and b) as slummymummy24 says above, the Metz will also work as an everyday backpack on holiday (in a way that I don't think the Manhattan quite will for me). The Manhattan does have a laptop pocket at the back but I don't need that.

The Metz also has compression straps which make it more compact once everything's in, and I managed to get it still to measure 40 x 20 x 25 (though see StaringAtTheWater's proviso above).

It also comes in some nice-looking colours. I have the 'petrol blue', which as I mentioned above turns out to have a secret pocket at the back, which apparently they don't all and you can't really see on the website which do.

Let's face it, there are lots of decent backpacks in lots of brands (inc some really nice ones that people have mentioned here) of which these are but two.

Well done if you've got to the end of this post without glazing over.
