Solo trip with DS5

DH wants to do a golf holiday with pals for a long weekend. Totally happy- he needs some friends time, he
barely spends time with then - no issues.

With this, I’d love to go on a long weekend holiday with DS aged 5, just the two of us.

He is super active, loves swimming and diving, loves delicious local food and always up for an adventure.

Any suggestions for where to go, keeping in mind he’s only 5. Maybe a combination of pool and relax time with some fun excursions.

How far are you wanting to go? The Isle of Wight might be a good option? Several of the hotels have a pool, or Whitecliff Bay holiday park is nice, right on the beach and has an indoor and outdoor pool. Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park I Isle of Wight Holiday Resort It's also near things like Blackgang Chime (amusement park- perfect for that age), the zoo, and the steam train. The ferry across is also usually exciting at that age.

We’re pretty happy to go local or within Europe (I think further afield may be a bit much for a long weekend). I haven’t thought of the Isle of Wight so will research- thank you!

No worries- Jersey or Guernsey could also be worth a look :)

For context if it helps - DS is used to planes and long haul so flying somewhere wouldn’t be an issue

This is great - out of Isle of Wight, jersey or Guernsey what would you recommend? (I have no experience of any of them).

I know Isle of Wight better than the other two, so just based on that I'd say IOW 😆Robin Hill country adventure park is also good there, as is the Dino museum, donkey sanctuary, and Ryde (the biggest town) is nice too, it's got a lovely beach. We normally take the ferry over with the car, but you could also do it as foot passengers depending on where you are based. 5 is the perfect age for most of the attractions on the island, they tend to lose appeal when the kids are older, it's a very child friendly island :)

Are you near an airport in the Uk?

ejimum · 04/12/2025 19:13

Pyongyang is a lovely city in the north of Korea.

Sprig1 · 04/12/2025 19:31

The Isle of Wight is perfect for a 5yo. The ferry across is an adventure in itself.

For a long weekend ??? Very random suggestion. Is North Korea even safe .

Yes I am near airports in the UK - Stansted, Gatwick, Luton, Heathrow, if it’s just me and DS, we would probably order a taxi. What would be the best port for Isle of Wight when commuting from east Anglia? Yes I am googling but figured I’d also ask here !

Part of me was thinking maybe Portugal or Greece

I’d go to parc natures in Paris. It’s a sort of Center parcs. Went with my daughter at that age. Fab pool and playgrounds. Day trips to Paris and Disneyland. Not too much travel time and Eurostar is super fun for a five year old.

Menorca - short flight and very family

Disney Paris vicinity is a good suggestion or Dunriell in the Netherlands. I haven't been to Dunriell but have heard good things, it's near the Hague and accessible from Amsterdam. I am also a fan of the Isle of Wight though, had a lovely holiday there in COVID times. We stayed in geodesic domes at Tapnell farm, had a hot tub, it was a lovely holiday.

Barcelona is a fun city for little ones. The beach is easily accessible and there are cable cars, Park Guell is worth exploring too, and lots of food options.
