If you're keen on a theme park, Chessington World of Adventures isn't that far from Legoland. If you want to stick to Windsor, there's the castle, of course, and you can get open-top bus rides from outside the castle. There are also boat trips down the river and a big wheel (like the London Eye). We did a day trip to Windsor last year and they are all within walking distance of each other.

Thank you - I'll pass it on. What a disaster!
Preparations, anticipation, air fares, car hire, hotel/Legoland package booking and it's shut! The boys have been looking forward to it for so long.........

They could hop on a train into London and go to the Science Museum/Natural History Museum/London Eye or similar.

Poor kids! I really recommend Chessington. It's got loads to do for kids of all ages. There's a small zoo and a Sea Life Centre as well as all the rides. Plenty of rides are suitable for younger children. Our DSs are 4 and 5 and they had a great time there. Thorpe Park is another theme park, also not that far from Legoland (not sure which is closer). I haven't been to that one personally but my SIL recommends it.

Chessington is brilliant with that age range - zoo as well as the theme park

Chessington is brilliant and not too far although Thorpe Park much much closer to Legoland/Heathrow etc but I havent actually been to Thorpe park - just drive past it a lot.

Thanks to all again. Salutory (and very expensive)lessons learned. Windsor and Chessington it is for the salvage operation.
