In half term? Or will temperatures be disappointing and everything closed?

We went to Corfu October half term 2021
It was lovely, warm enough for the pool/beach but needed a cardi at night.
Plus is wasn't full of the summer holiday crowd

We have been to Rhodes and it was lovely (Lindos and Pefkos).
ent to Crete in 2022 and it was cold in the north (Heraklion) but much warmer in the south (Matala).

Aegean Greece is fab in October. A lot closes for winter at the end of October.

We went to Athens in October a few years ago. Lovely warm weather during the day but yes needed a jacket a night.

Crete. Sea warm. Some places have heated pools eg Esperides in Koutouloufari

Thelonelydonkey · 12/05/2025 21:02

The Cyclades were freezing Oct half term and nearly everything was shut.

Same experience as above. Went in early October, beautiful weather but everywhere was shut or closing in the Cyclades.

I’d pick Crete or Rhodes for a longer season and more to do that isn’t beach/pool based.

We've been to Greece a few times in Oct half term and it's always been great but we do tend to head quite far south (e.g. Crete, Rhodes etc) Last year we went to Mykonos & Naxos (so less south than normal) and it was lovely weather but a few locals we chatted to did imply we were lucky with the weather, which made me think it might not always be so nice...

In my experience, most places remain open for UK half term but then shut straight after (and some places shut a few days early)

We went to Santorini in October and it was around 18-20, was definitely Cardigan weather. One day the entire island misted over and another there was heavy rain that caused lots of large rocks to fall into the roads, bit like a landslide I guess but not that severe. Was quite alarming in our tiny little car rental though! There were lots of things unavailable in shops due to being at the very end of the season. It was still a nice experience overall but if we go back I would go in spring.

Beautiful weather in Crete over October half term. The only bit of the island we saw that started to get closed was the tiny no-roads village of Loutro on the south coast - as it got closer to Oxi Day (national holiday) they all started packing up and leaving. But back in Chania it was bustling and totally fine. I couldn’t have borne the heat in the summer -
October half term was perfect, mid to high 20s.

Thanks. That place looks lovely, but is is suitable for families with young DC? Looked a bit serene and like it would be full of child-free couples trying to relax...?

We’ve been a few times in October. It was mostly warm and sunny but be prepared for the odd storm. We witnessed a dramatic thunder storm one year, with torrential rain. They were sweeping rain out of the dining area. It does rain that time of year but it’s usually short lived.

TWTravelAngel · 13/05/2025 11:42

Stick to the larger islands Rhodes, Kos and Crete weather can be glorious in October, or look at Turkey which can be slightly warmer and more going on in October

Moier · 13/05/2025 11:50

We go to Corfu last week in September or early October and it can be 30 degrees still.
Average around 25
Have a fabulous time.

Radiatorvalves · 13/05/2025 11:55

I’ve been to Corfu in early May and we could have been in Scotland - the weather was not good! Aim for Crete or one of the other southern islands and I’m sure you’ll have a good time.

Yatuway · 13/05/2025 16:43

I've been to Crete and Kos then. Crete was much more lively, though a little cooler. The resort in Kos was very 'end of season' but it was also a proper cheapo offering. You may do better with something more expensive. I did find Kos Town was good to explore then, however. Enough going on, not rammed or too hot. I don't think I'd risk the weather any further north than these two or Rhodes, especially if you have the later rather than the earlier half term week iyswim.
