Vienna for a week

We’ve got a hankering to go to Vienna in Autumn, is a week too long? Like to get out in the countryside a bit too. Any ideas of good things to do. Is the food good? I find German/Austrian food a bit heavy, but I’m hoping a capital city will have more options.

You won’t find it hard to fill a week in Vienna.
If you can, coincide your visit with the first Saturday in October, then you can do the Long Night of Museums which is a brilliant event. Just about every museum you’ve heard of (and many you haven’t) participates, so the choice is huge. The museums tend to put on special tours or events just for the occasion.
For a nice day trip, I would take a train to Melk, visit the Abbey, then take the cruise to Dürnstein, from there by bus or taxi to Krems and back to Vienna by train. Another option is train to Krems and pick up a bike then cycle to Spitz and back.
The train from Vienna to Salzburg generally takes around 2 hr 30, so that’s doable in a day trip too.

Schloss Schönbrunn is definitely worth a visit. We enjoyed the audio guide.
You can also take a train to Bratislava (Slovakia) in about an hour.

Schoenbrunn is beautiful. My favourite museum/gallery is the upper Belvedere which houses the Kiss in addition to other fabulous Klimt masterpieces.
Hundertwasser house is also worth a look and the incinerator. I used to live in Austria and am a fan of both Klimt and Hundertwasser.

You could also visit Budapest, it’s 2 hours by train from Vienna.

I think it’s also possible to do a day trip to Bratislava by train or boat.

Agree about seeing the Klimt. Exceptional. In addition to ideas above: We also liked seeing a practice of the Spanish riding school in their grand arena. Book early for show tickets. The history museum is good and also the Hofburg Palace and the Sisi collection - the size of her waist! It’s a city that’s easy to navigate and certainly trips along the Rhine are a good idea.

We loved the Music Museum.

I’d get a day trip to Bratislava whilst you’re so close. I’d also say Hallstatt but that’s a long way.
Graz is two hours away and a truly lovely city.
